Grades 7 & 8
"Band, Chorus and Orchestra are elective courses which are designed to lead students to an understanding and mastery of musicianship skills. Performing ensembles’ Essential Learnings are based on the National Standards for Music Education and include music literacy, reflection/evaluation and the principles of performance. Students in performing ensembles use a common core of vocabulary to describe and evaluate theirs and others’ performances and prescribe strategies for improvement.
Band and Orchestra have two equally important components: large group rehearsals and small group lessons. Large group rehearsals are scheduled every other day, small group lessons are scheduled once every four days, and both of these classes occur during the Unified Arts periods. Small group lessons are conducted for the purpose of developing further musical and technical ability and to allow for proper assessment and evaluation of individual students.
Chorus rehearses and performs standard choral repertoire in a variety of musical styles including World Music and pieces representing various historical periods. Learning goals include developing proper vocal technique (posture, breathing, tone, and diction) and ensemble technique (intonation, balance, and blend). Students develop facilities in sight reading using the solfege system. Extra-curricular opportunities include collaboration concerts with elementary choruses and performances at community events. Choral students are eligible to sing with the Dodd Glee Club - a non-auditioned ensemble which meets after school.
Extracurricular opportunities include various small ensembles for wind, percussion, and string musicians. Jazz Band is offered to all musicians as a before-school program. Chamber Orchestra is offered to all string musicians as a before-school program. Small ensembles perform within the Cheshire community throughout the school year.
Winter and Spring concerts are scheduled for all performing ensembles. Students enrolled in the performing arts are expected to participate in all rehearsals and concerts.
Enrollment in music classes at Dodd is a full year commitment.
May my child choose more than one performing group?
Yes.
May my child join the Band or Orchestra without any previous playing experience?
No. At least one year of experience with a band or orchestra instrument is required, and two years is preferred. Enrollment in band and orchestra is subject to the recommendation of your child’s present instrumental teacher.
Do students receive a grade in Band, Orchestra, and Chorus?
Yes. Students are assessed and graded in Band, Orchestra, and Chorus just as they are in all subject areas at Dodd.
Will my child be required to come after school for any rehearsals?
There are no requirements outside of the school day except for the performances and home practice. However, all three subject areas offer small ensembles that students may opt to join.
Does being a member of a musical ensemble conflict with sports or other after school clubs or programs?
No. Many Dodd musicians are in other clubs and sports.
