Grades 7 & 8

The 7th and 8th grade art programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge and opportunities to explore a variety of art disciplines. Courses are offered in three disciplines: Drawing, Painting and Three Dimensional Art. Each course is a quarter in length. Art history and aesthetics are taught as they relate to specific assignments. Within the confines of each lesson, students will develop the skills necessary to define problems, make choices and obtain creative solutions. Students will also have opportunities to reflect upon, describe, analyze and interpret their own and others’ work.

The art curriculum is cumulative and the content and skills are taught according to the developmental level of the student. Evaluation is based on the National Standards for Visual Arts, journals, critiques, creation and reflection.


Drawing 7: This course will focus on developing the student’s drawing skills and techniques. Students will have a choice of traditional or digital media for the Final Drawing Choice Board. Artists of study will be introduced with each assignment as it relates to the concepts of study. This course is offered to 7th graders for 10 weeks.

Drawing 8: This course will focus on developing a personal drawing style (Abstract, Realistic, Digital). Artists of study will be introduced with each assignment as it relates to the concepts of study. Students will have choices regarding drawing media (i.e. digital, traditional) and choice of a Final Drawing assignment from a choice board. This course is offered to 8th graders for 10 weeks.

Painting 7: This course is designed to increase the student’s knowledge of paint as an expressive media. The principles of color theory and color mixing will be taught. Painting units will include both traditional and digital media. This course is offered to 7th graders for 10 weeks.

Painting 8: This course is designed to develop the student’s ability to work with painting as a media for creating art. There will be an emphasis on composition development and technique. Painting units will include both traditional and digital media. This course is offered to 8th graders for 10 weeks.

Three Dimensional Art 7: Students will use a variety of clay tools and techniques as they create works that relate to relief or sculpture. This course is offered to 7th graders for 10 weeks.

Three Dimensional Art 8: Students will use a variety of media as they create three dimensional works that relate to relief or sculpture in the round. This course is offered to 8th graders for 10 weeks.

FAQ

Who takes Art?

All students are required to take Art for one quarter in grades 7 and 8. They may elect to take additional Art classes.


What is required?

A sketchbook (at least 8” x 10”) with blank pages is required for all art classes. Students are expected to work on each assignment to the best of their abilities, following the guidelines stated in the assignment specific rubric. Ample time is given in class for each assignment, and students are expected to complete their work by the assigned due dates.


How are students assessed?

Art is a required course and students will receive a letter grade on their report cards. Grades are derived from assignment specific rubrics, journals, written evaluations, work habits and quizzes
