Student work is to be celebrated, and it is something our teachers take to heart. However, there are approximately 8,000 students enrolled in our K-12 visual arts programs, and it is not practical to include all students in the district -wide show. Our teachers actively look for ways to showcase student work throughout the schools and the community. We regularly display work in the school buildings, as well as at the State Employee's Credit Unions, the public library, local businesses, coffee shops, art festivals, benefits, the state fair, and a variety of other places. There are many, many opportunities throughout the K-12 experience. Several of our teachers also offer extracurricular clubs that allow students to explore creative interests in more depth. Some of our visual art students are also involved in the set design of our musicals.

The rainbow project is a featured, stand-alone exhibit. It evolved during remote learning. Ms. Murphy heard about the project through the media, and Ms. Fisher knew of other counties participating. All of our elementary visual art teachers collaborated on the rainbow project, and many of the elementary teachers incorporated rainbow songs into their lessons as well.

In 2019-2020, we began a mural project to highlight student voice in the the central offices building, as well as to bring color to the hallways. These were to be displayed in the Lincoln Center, and unveiled during the Visions Art Show in April. Due to our school closures, some of these murals were completed, and some were not. You may see examples of these murals throughout the displays from the various schools. They require a big vision, a big time commitment, and lots of collaboration!

One particular challenge of remote learning, was that not all students had access to the same materials. Crayons were distributed for elementary students, and colored pencils to secondary students that needed them. To supplement, our teachers incorporated a wide variety of materials into instruction, including use of recycled materials, materials from nature, found objects from the household, and even laundry sculptures. AP students were able to check out art supplies from the school, so that they could submit the College Board portfolios.

Although the majority of the art in the show is not COVID-themed, you will see some. The global crisis is a significant current issue, and provides opportunity for deep thought and reflection. Visual art teachers often incorporate current issues and events into the curriculum. This student responded visually to a choice board response about COVID-19.

All of our elementary schools incorporate three dimensional work throughout the year. Our middle schools offer sculpture electives, using a wide variety of media, for 7th and 8th grade students. High schools offer ceramics and honors ceramics electives.
All of the ceramics work that was fired in the kiln was completed before the closing of our buildings. The 3D teachers and students incredibly resourceful thinking to continue creating 3D work without traditional materials.

Students from all three of our comprehensive high schools are enrolled in AP Art & Design courses. The visual art teachers have specialized training to teach this course, and all attended a SCAD institute in Atlanta in summer of 2019.
Enrollment in AP classes includes completion of a rigorous portfolio, and is submitted to the College Board for evaluation. Students submitted portfolios on May 26, 2020. Read more about the College Board requirements HERE.
In addition to the AP Art & Design portfolios, AP Art History students completed exams.
