Students are encouraged to work with their counselors, teachers and parents as they consider their career future. Charleston County School District provides all students with access to Naviance, an invaluable resource in helping to identify career interests and opportunities. Employment in generally difficult in South Carolina for undocumented students since the implementation of E-verify, an Internet-based system that allows businesses to determine eligibility of employees to work in the United States. U.S. law requires companies to employ only individuals who may legally work in the United States – either U.S. citizens, or foreign citizens who have the necessary authorization.
Undocumented students are strongly encouraged to investigate requirements and policies related to the licensure and/or certification requirements for any career field (including college degree requirements and CTE programs such as cosmetology, etc). Current SC policy precludes students other than US Citizen from applying for many of these credentials.
Students should also consider participating in one of Charleston County School District's many Career & Technology Education (CTE) programs or attending classes at one of the Centers for Advanced Studies. These courses are invaluable College and Career Readiness opportunities for all students as they help to prepare them for the workforce and post-secondary education.
