Serving for ELs Who Opt Out of Services

Local Education Agency (LEA) Responsibilities*

The LEA must ensure...

Parents are aware of their right to opt their child out of EL programs or specific EL services.
Parents are aware, not just of the services offered, but of the benefits the services will provide.
The notification letter and waiver are in a language the parents understand.
EL students retain status as an EL student in the SIS and MSDS.
Continue to monitor proficiency and progress of students who are opted out of services.
Parents of EL students who do not demonstrate growth or maintain academic levels are contacted in a language they understand and offered EL services.
