Academic year 2019 - 2020
Colegio Gran Bretaña ceased on-campus activities on 03/12/2020 and immediately pivoted to online learning under our COVID-19 Pandemic Codes of action. During distance learning, our schedule remained unchanged from 7:25 AM to 2:50 PM, with 50-minute classes conducted synchronously. Online classes involved teacher-student interaction on a daily basis and included different web-based tools. To ensure the safeguarding of our students, teachers were aware of the environment and who was accessing Google Hangouts and Google Classrooms.
Evaluation Policy
Grades from Term 1 and 2 were published as usual.
Term 3 was assessed as either Beginning, Developing, or Mastering.
2.1 Beginning (1-3) The student demonstrates the initial stages of understanding of the required knowledge and skills, however, can only apply them with support.
2.2 Developing (4-5) The student demonstrates a good general understanding of the required knowledge and skills that are expected at this grade level and they can apply them in a variety of situations with minimal support.
2.3 Mastering (6-7) The student displays a consistent and exemplary understanding of the required knowledge and skills and can apply them almost faultlessly, and independently, in a wide variety of situations. Consistent analysis, synthesis and evaluations are evident. The student demonstrates originality and insight.
The final descriptive grade (Beginning, Developing, Mastering) for each subject was based on evidence of learning throughout the year, as well as the subject teachers’ professional judgment. This applies for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Academic year 2020 - 2021
At CGB we have 4 Pandemic Codes (stages) for the reopening of school. Due to the restrictive government guidelines, we will begin our first term in Code 4.
To minimise disruption to learning, in the Secondary Section, during the most strict Pandemic Codes, Colegio Gran Bretaña will deliver lessons through a blended model of both synchronous and asynchronous methodologies, and on a fixed schedule. The blended approach in Secondary allows students to engage in learning with both their teachers and classmates at the same time. With the blended approach, not only knowledge and ideas can be easily exchanged, but also students can receive immediate feedback from their fellow learners and teachers. Schedule for Secondary has been modified to 40-minute classes from 8:30 AM to 1:10 PM.
All learning in Secondary is virtual and conducted synchronously. Students will either be in Colombia, or abroad, and everyone will learn remotely. During the afternoon from 2:00 to 3:45 PM, we have 15-minutes periods for students to check in with teachers (according to subjects taught in the morning) and fixed days for performing arts classes and Pruebas Saber 11 study time (Colombian state test). Once we are able to begin our transition back to on-campus learning, we will return on a 2 houses per day basis. In this Code, we will have half of the student body physically on site.
Assessment and Grading
Whilst in distance learning, in the Secondary Section, exam-style tests/quizzes will not be used to generate grades. Assessments to generate grades may be, but not limited to, any of the following: Project-based, Discovery-based, Performance-based, Conceptual-based, Collaborative-based.
