March – Strawberries
The Friday before (2/23/18): Strawberries are in their peak season for a few more months, but we are harvesting them from our gardens during March. Have you ever tried counting how many seeds are on a single strawberry? There are on average of 200 seeds on one strawberry! In addition, it is one of the only fruits that you will see seeds on the outside of the fruit. Seeds of the fruit provide fiber which we learned last month is good to help us stay full for longer.
The Monday of (2/26/18): Even though strawberries can be found fresh, frozen, dried, or as a jam, eating them fresh or frozen may be the best way to enjoy their flavor and nutrition. If you have the chance to go by your school’s garden, stop to smell the strawberries. This fruit is part of the rose family, so they give off a sweet smell when growing.
The Friday of (3/2/18): Today in the Power Up Café we are offering strawberries as our garden fresh produce. You may even be able to smell them before you see them! Strawberries are sweet, juicy, and a pretty red color – making it a wonderful sweet treat to go with your lunch!
