Minors under 16:
Federal law extremely limits the hours that minors under the age of 16 can work. Approved work permit required before hiring.
Minors 16 and 17: (While enrolled in school)
Can NOT work:
During school hours
More than 6 consecutive days per week
Before 7 a.m. on a school day
Before 5 a.m. on a non-school day
After 10:15 p.m. the night before a school day
After midnight when there is no school the next day
Maximum hours that may be worked:
No more than 6 hours on a school day
No more than 8 hours on the last school day of the week
No more than 10 hours in a day when school is not in session
No more than 24 hours a week in any week with 3 or more school days
No more than 50 hours a week each week there are less than 3 scheduled school days or during the first and last week of the school calendar
Minors can Not work during school hours even if they are not enrolled in school.
ALL employees must be offered a 30-consecutive minute break for every six hours worked. Does not have to be a paid break.
