Minors under 16:
Federal law extremely limits the hours that minors under the age of 16 can work.
Minors 16 and 17: When School in in session:
Can NOT work:
Before 6:00 a.m. on any day
After 10:30 p.m. on any day
More than 6 hours per day on school day
More than 8 hours per day on non-school day
More than 30 hours per week
When School is not is session there are no restrictions.
Minors under 18 years of age must have a 30 minute break if working more than 5 hours. The beginning and ending of the lunch period shall be documented by the employer.
If scheduled more than 5 hours, all employees are to receive a "reasonable" off-duty unpaid period to eat a meal (the law doesn't specify how long this break must be). The break must be close to the middle of the employee's shift. (usually between the 3rd and 5th hour.)
All employees are to receive a paid ten-minute rest break for each four-hour period they work. These breaks are in addition to the meal break.
