When I attended Allen East High School, I accumulated over 1,500 volunteer hours in several classroom and educational settings.
I visited Mrs. Haberman's Intervention classroom every week at Allen East Middle School in Harrod, Ohio to work with fifth graders. I would then attend a period of fifth grade science class with an Autistic student. Over Spring Break, I spent all day at Allen East helping in fifth grade classrooms due to the overwhelming quantity of students with IEPs and special needs.
Throughout December of 2016, I visited Mrs. Clum's first grade classroom at Allen East Elementary School in Harrod, Ohio. I spent two weeks with her students to help them with the hectic holiday season. This field experience was designed to help immerse me into the "teaching lifestyle."
I digitally met with Mrs. Walls from Ohio Connections Academy every week for 5 weeks and completed assignments based on our interactions. I wrote a digital lesson for her to teach based on my experiences in her digital classroom.
I visited Mills Lawn Elementary School in Yellow Springs, Ohio twice a week for the entire semester. I interacted with diverse students (ethnic, religious, race, etc.) and learned about creating classroom environments that accommodate diverse populations.
I spent 10 days in the classroom at Arrowood Elementary School in Xenia, Ohio. I taught many days and worked one-on-one with students. I assisted Mrs. Cravens with classroom activities.
For an entire semester, I spent 3 days a week in Mrs. Kidd's first grade classroom at Main Elementary School in Beavercreek, Ohio. I attended professional development days, taught lessons, provided reading tutoring, and completed countless classroom tasks. I developed strong relationships with students and staff.
I spent 5 days at the Yellow Springs Community Children's Center volunteering as a preschool teacher. I spent time working with 3-12 year olds while I was there. I alternated between different rooms assisting teachers as needed.
I spent 7 days at Greeneview Elementary School in Mrs. Fischer's fourth grade classroom. While I was at Greeneview, I collaborated with three other student teachers to plan and teach a unit on energy and electricity. This involved many experiments and hands-on learning. I helped Mrs. Fischer clean her classroom and prepare for the new school year.
I spent an entire semester at Shawnee Elementary in Xenia, Ohio for my Methods 2 field experience. For the first half of the semester, I went to the school on Wednesdays. I was the at Shawee full time every day for the second half of the semester. While I was at Shawnee, I learned so much about the Xenia Community City Schools District. I helped my mentor teacher, Mrs. Baumgartner, by teaching 2nd grade math, library, science, and social studies. I created a hands-on learning environment and created math groups. I reworked the math schedule to allow for math centers. My students were thrilled as it was their first time experiencing stations.
