Kindergarten 2018-2019

Rainbow Chameleon

-Students will read A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni, and create a chameleon using the colors of the rainbow in proper order.

First Grade 2018-2019

Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

-Students will read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, and create a painted based on the story. Students will discuss the job of an illustrator and they will use the wax resist painting method to create a picture inspired by the illustrations in the book.

Second Grade 2018-2019

Chilean Arpilleras

-Students will discuss and view examples of the arpillera art form of Chile. Arpilleras are quilted pictures made with layers of fabric. Students will create a painting collage and practice the whip stitch to weave yarn around the edges of their collage to create a quilted edge.

Kindergarten 2017-2018

Pinch Pot Tea Cups

-Students will create a tea cup sculpture using the pinch pot method for the cup and create a coil for the handle. They will glaze them to give them color.

First Grade 2017-18

Chihuly Flower Sculpture

-Students will hear about the life and artwork of Dale Chihuly and create a work inspired by his glass blown sculptures using transparency sheets and acrylic paint.

Second Grade 2017-18

Weaving Magic Carpets

-Students will hear about how the history of the legend of the magic carpet and view examples of rugs from the Middle East. They will use the weaving process to create their own magic carpet out of construction paper and use marker or colored pencil to decorate it.

Kindergarten 2017-2018

Mouse Paint Mice

-Students will practice mixing pairs of primary colors to create the secondary colors. We will read the story Mouse Paint to inspire a collage picture using the primary colors.

First Grade 2017-2018

Monet Waterlily Pond

-Students will hear about the life and artwork of Claude Monet. They will create an impressionistic painting of Monet’s waterlily pond using tempera, watercolor, and acrylic paint.

Second Grade 2017-2018

The Great Wave off Kanagawa

-Students will hear about the life and artwork of Japanese artist, Hokusai. Students will create their own version of his Great Wave off Kanagawa Painting to demonstrate movement in artwork.

Kindergarten 2017-2018

Primary Color Winter Houses

-Students will read The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. They will discuss the changes the house goes through when city begins to take over the country it was settled in. They will use the story to inspire a winter scene of three houses using the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.

First Grade 2017-2018

Snowmen at Night

-Students will read Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. Students will discuss the way the illustrator shows movement and how they add different colors in the snow to make the snowmen look realistic. Students will draw their own snowman at night and practice blending warm and cool colors of chalk pastel with white to create value and shadow.

Second Grade 2017-2018

Grandma Moses Snow Globe

-Students will read about the life and artwork of folk artist, Grandma Moses. Students will view examples of her artwork and observe the way objects look close up and far away based on placement and size. They will create a snow globe collage of a winter scene that includes 3 houses, 3 trees, and 3 tree people.

Kindergarten 2017-2018

Very Hungry Rainbow Caterpillars

-Students will read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. They will create a caterpillar in the colors of the color spectrum and sing a song to help them remember the order of the rainbow colors.

Second Grade 2017-2018

The Monster in My Closet

-Students read the book The Monster in My Closet by Eric Klug. They will begin by writing a sentence to describe their monster using three adjectives. Then they will design their monster based on their description.

Kindergarten 2017-2018

Fall Leaves

-This week students read, Let it Fall, and discussed the colors that leaves change in the Fall season. They heard about what causes the leaves to change color, and did a leaf rubbing activity with laminated leaves. This project will lead into a Kandinsky Fall Tree project which will begin next week.

First Grade 2017-2018

Textured Pumpkins

-This week students read, Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin Pie, and discussed the life cycle of a pumpkin. This will lead into a painting collage project where student will draw, paint, add texture, cut out, and glue a collage of Fall leaves and pumpkins.

Second Grade 2017-2018

Laurel Burch Fantastic Felines

-This week students were introduced to the life and artwork of Laurel Burch. Students defined Laurel Burch as a folk artist, an artist who never took an art class. They described the way her animal paintings show lots of pattern and how they have human- like eyes. They will be creating a painting collage of a cat in the style of Laurel Burch with lots of pattern and color.

September 5th-11th (Art Portfolios)

Students will be begin decorating their art portfolios. Students will take home an art portfolio at the end of the year to carry home all their artwork in, so that they can easily transport everything home. The portfolio will act like a giant folder that they can store all their 2-D projects in after the art show.

Students will focus on creating symbols to represent their favorite food, toy, animal, holiday, and game. We defined a symbol as a picture that represents or means something. They even game examples of symbols they could create to represent Halloween as their favorite holiday. Students will draw a collage of 5 symbols and color them in. This assignment will not be graded and allows students to get some drawing practice in before beginning their graded projects.

August 24th-September 1st (Rules and Expectations)

Students will be introduced to art class expectations and procedures this week and next week.
