Rein Poortvliet Gnomes
-Students will view the artwork of Dutch painter, Rien Poortvliet, recognized for his paintings of gnomes. Students will draw a design and create a gnome out of clay by connecting three pinch pots together using the score and slip process for attaching clay. Finally, they will name their gnome and write a creative description of their little creature.
Visual Culture Masks
-Students will define, discuss, and view examples of Visual Culture. They will focus on the use of cartoons in the media as a form of advertising in our culture. Students will work with partners to create a cartoon mask from a two dimensional drawing.
String Art Cross
-Students will view images of Jesus in art and reflect on what the “Cross” symbol means to them as a Catholic. They will create a unique Cross shape with a religious symbol and the center of the intersecting lines, and chose two or more colors to color in their cross design. They will use this design to create a string art version of their drawing. The symbolism associated with their artwork will be recorded on their reflection sheets.
One Point Perspective Cityscape
-Students will practice the method of linear perspective called one point perspective to create the illusion of making a 3-D object on a 2-D surface. Linear perspective is a mathematical approach used by artist to create a realistic drawing of objects in perspective. This involves using a horizon line, vanishing point, and orthogonal lines. Students will use the one point perspective method to create a cityscape of their own.
Abstract Sculptures
-Students heard about the intentions of artists when creating abstract sculptures. They intent to use nature as inspiration for their work, but they do not intent to recreate exactly what they see. They choose to focus on certain aspects of nature to create something original. Students viewed images of abstract sculptures and tried to guess what the artist titled their work. Students will create their own abstract sculpture using a wire hanger, nylon sock, and paint. They will design a sculpture using pattern and color and title their according to it's form or the why they painted it.
Scratch Art Contrast
-Students will define the art principle of contrast and view examples of how it can be used in art to create emphasis. Students viewed images of the scratch board method of drawing. Artists begin with a black surface and scrape it to reveal areas of highlight. Students will practice the hatching techniques in order to create value and texture when using scratch board. They will choose an image of choice to draw and recreate on scratch board.
Clay Castle Sculpture
-Due to positive behavior and preparedness for art class during first quarter, students in this group were awarded with voting on a project of choice for their next assignment. Students decided to create a castle from clay using the slab method. They viewed examples of medieval castles and defined the different features and functions of a castle including draw bridge, towers, keep, and battlements. They will design their castle to have a minimum of 4 walls, 2 towers, and an entrance side.
Burton Morris Pop Art Collage
-Students will view the life and art of pop artist, Burton Morris. Students will focus on their use of shape for this project. They will create a collage from cut paper to create a Burton Morris style poster of a pop art object.
Continuous Line Doodles
-Students will be introduced to the elements of art. They will focus on the element of line for this project. Students will create a random continuous line in black sharpie marker. When complete, they will look at the shapes within their continuous lines and draw details within them to make a doodle collage.
Rhythm and Pattern Abstract Animals
-Students will focus on the Principles of Art and how Elements of Art can be combined to create interesting works of art. For this project, students will focus on repetition, pattern, and rhythm to create an animal drawing inspired by modern abstract artist, Ian Macarthar. Students will use the grid drawing method to draw their animal from a printed image and paint the animal with acrylic paint using lots of color and pattern.
Wayne Thiebaud Still Life
-Students will hear about the life and artwork of Wayne Thiebaud. He is known as an artist who helped influenced the pop art movement. His paintings depicted a variety of subjects, but he is most famous for his paintings of photorealistic sweets and desserts. Students will create a candy still life on a rule of thirds grid and create a realistic painting of their still life using acrylic paint and watercolor pencil to create value and form.
Students will be begin creating and decorating their art portfolios. Students will take home an art portfolio at the end of the year to carry home all their artwork in, so that they can easily transport everything home. The portfolio will act like a giant folder that they can store all their 2-D projects in after the art show.
6th and 7th Grade students will focus on creating symbols to represent who they are. They began by drawing their first name in funky letters such as block or bubble letters. Next, they could choose to represent any of their favorite things or draw objects that are personal to them as long as they come of with 5 different symbols. We defined a symbol as a picture that represents or means something. They even game examples of symbols they could use to represent something about their identity. Students will draw their first name and a collage of 5 symbols and color them in. This assignment will not be graded and allows students to get some drawing practice in before beginning their graded projects.
8th Grade students will decorate their portfolio by drawing a movie poster that represents their life as a movie. Students viewed examples of movie posters from different genres and had to decide on a theme. They included a movie title and images to relate to their movie title. They colored in their image if they had time. They too will not be graded on this assignment as it allows them an opportunity to practice drawing before their first graded project..
Students will be introduced to art class expectations and procedures this week and next week.
