Blue and White Ming Vases
-Students heard about the Chinese art form of blue and white porcelain vases which were created during the Mind Dynasty. Students found out that they were an important export as well as a work of art. They observed the content depicted on the vases as organic shapes and patterns, dragons, people, and landscapes. Students will create a Ming vase of their own using the scratch art technique.
Henna Hand Sculptures
-Students heard about the art of henna and where it originated. Henna is a cultural form of body painting thought to have come from Egypt and later becoming a practice used in many Asian countries such as India. The art of henna is often used in ceremonies such as weddings. The bride and groom would decorate each others hands as a way of bonding before their marriage. They will create a hand out of clay using the slab process and engrave a henna design into the palm. Then they will glaze the hand to add color.
Paper Quill Fish Tank
-Students heard about the art form of paper quilling. It is said that paper quilling began with the French and Italian nuns in the 1500-1600s. They would used the guilt edges of Bibles to roll paper and use them to decorate religious articles. Later mostly wealthy, proper women would use paper quilling as a hobby. Today it can be used in scrap booking or to decorate various objects. Students will create a fish tank painting and fill the tank with fish made through the paper quilling process.
Day of the Dead Skulls
-Students compared the Mexican Holiday, The Day of the Dead with Halloween. Students found out that the Day of the Dead is a celebration that remembers and honors loved ones who have passed away. Skulls and skeletons are colorful and vibrant. They viewed artwork depicting symmetrical skull designs which will inspire a painting using primary and secondary colors.
Day of the Dead Nichos
-Students will hear about the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead. They will discuss how skeleton decorations for day of the dead are lively and not supposed to be scary. Students will hear about the nicho as a form of Mexican folk art. A nicho is a diorama depicting important figures. Students will create a skeleton nicho using shrinky dinks, popscicle sticks, cardboard, and paint.
Thomas Kinkade Lighthouses
-Students viewed the life and artwork of painter, Thomas Kinkade. He is renown as the "Painter of Light" for his use of contrasting color in his paintings. Students will focus on his lighthouse paintings for inspiration. They will practice blending oil pastels to create a high contrast lighthouse drawing.
Warm and Cool Hundertwasser Collage
-Students watched a short film about the life and artwork of Hundertwasser of Vienna. Students viewed examples of his abstract paintings and architecture. They discussed the important role nature played in his work and why spirals are used frequently in his work. They will create a textured collage of trees and hills in the style of Hundertwasser using texture, line, and color.
Folk Art Cityscape
-Students will view artwork by two different folk artists, Jeanette Carlstrom and Heather Galler. Students will compare and contrast their art style and the way they use line, shape, and color. They will chose one of the artist's for inspiration and create their own version of a cityscape in the either style of their choice using similar characteristics as the artist in there drawing.
Victorian Houses
-Students will view examples of different types of Victorian style homes. They will choose a style of Victorian home to draw and create a print of. Then they will add silhouettes of spooky trees and birds to their print and foggy clouds with charcoal. This will make for a print and painting perfectly spooky for Halloween!
Students will be begin creating and decorating their art portfolios. Students will take home an art portfolio at the end of the year to carry home all their artwork in, so that they can easily transport everything home. The portfolio will act like a giant folder that they can store all their 2-D projects in after the art show.
Students will focus on creating symbols to represent who they are. They began by drawing their first name in funky letters such as block or bubble letters. Next, they could choose to represent any of their favorite things or draw objects that are personal to them as long as they come of with 5 different symbols. We defined a symbol as a picture that represents or means something. They even game examples of symbols they could use to represent something about their identity. Students will draw their first name and a collage of 5 symbols and color them in. This assignment will not be graded and allows students to get some drawing practice in before beginning their graded projects.
Students will be introduced to art class expectations and procedures this week and next week.
