My exhibition is linked together by 3 very important components: Time, Identity and subconscious. These three components make up a dreamworld that I create in my head to give me comfort.
My artworks all flow together as an evolution of myself and how I understand this evolution. My first two artworks, unnamed and Nihil aeternum deal with the relationship between time and identity. Throughout our lives, we become different people yet all of these different versions of ourselves combine together to create our identity. Nothing is eternal but instead everything is constantly evolving. This body of work documents the evolution of ourselves as we change the narrative with time.
I use a large range of mediums and material to create my artworks, trying something new every time is something that motivates me and gives me inspiration. I use acrylic paint, watercolor, aquarelle. I go from 2D to 3D finding the best way to express the feelings I have and my vision of the world we are in.
For one of my pieces I decided to recreate the dreamworld with all its dimensions but still keep it in a 2D style, that’s when I got the idea of glass layers. I put the papers representing the building between each layer of glass, placing the water to play with the light and shadows, it gives the feeling that you can look deep into it.
In my exhibition the artwork is displayed in a circle, you have to enter the circle to see them. The circle serves as a giant clock, the person entering creating a shadow that shows the hour. The artwork is the timestamp going from 2D project to 3D projects as time goes. Lights are disposed on top of each artwork, they can manually be activated by the audience, this changes the place of their shadow in the circle and therefore the hour of the day. You can hear a clock ticking, sometimes it goes fast and sometimes it goes extra slowly, this is to confuse the audience in the way they perceive time.
I want them to perceive time the way I do, how confused it becomes when I spend too much time in my daydream and how fast and sometimes slow I feel it passes.
unnamed
Digital
This piece represents the way I see identity by showing the different faces we got inside of us. We live with many emotions but we mostly live with many personalities we created inside of our mind in the different periods of our life or different situations we face. It goes from the childhood naivety in yellow to a very daring neon green, confident and arrogant from time to time. They are all a formation of different things we knew and lived and together they form who we are.
Nihil aeternum
Aquarelle and Color Pencil
This artwork only shows a sec in the journey of growing up and seeing our world disappear, turning into a memory.
But at the same time this is the memory which gives ground to the painting for one sec it looks almost complete.
I realize the importance of each second spent with the one we love. I named it Nihil aeternum: nothing is eternal in latin because as time goes this painting will itself become only a memory. The realization that time passes makes me really live and exist in this world.
La danse des papillons (the dance of butterflies)
Acrylic on Canvas
The myth of Icarus follows him and his father as they both fly to freedom with wings made out of clay. When Icarus gets too close to the sun his wings start to melt and he falls to his death. In the painting his wings are butterfly wings that are disenabling because of how thin they are. They both represent this idea of freedom brought by a flying butterfly and the fact that every action you do can have consequences around you (butterfly effect). This is a hopeful message, that everyone's actions can have a great impact but also to our fall. Hope is what keeps us high in the sky and what is gonna influence the world, but it also causes our fall.
Into the gold
Gouache on Illustration Board
Into the gold shows the wondering feeling I have at the golden hour. The sepia tones colors represent the golden hour and the nostalgia found in old photographie. I fall into the city of thoughts full of questions during this time between day and night when it almost seems like the world is falling asleep. The hand reaching out has 2 meanings, it represents trying to find answers, the skeleton being the spiritual self, or death reaching out as falling asleep almost seems like death.
Dreamland
Paper, Acrylic, Glass
The different glass layers show the different layers of the subconscious. We all create cities in our minds, this is mine, my dreamland, the deeper you look the deeper the water seems to be. The reflections of the building are covered in eyes, watching me showing my doubt or my anxiety toward my every action.
City of Thoughts
Clay, Acrylic, Wires and Lamp
My world is held by my unconscious, the light and the shadows create the city I invent and the symbols start to make sense. Like a planet, I orbit around my own stream of thoughts and it’s getting harder to get down to reality, get my head “off the cloud”. Everything is held together in a precarious equilibrium but if you don’t move it will stay in place.
Portraits of mind set
Acrylic on Canvas
Those four small paintings are acting like windows in my mind. Showing both classical works and original work. In the classical paintings I lay my focus on portraits and expressions where original works hold equilibrium by the hands. Those are two elements I find important because they are what holds the emotions. The aid feelings are up to interpretation.
