UNRAVEL : IBDP Visual Art Show 2022

Unravel - to become undone or to unfold something that has been difficult to understand or solve.

When I think about the last 2 years working with this group of 11 unique IBDP Visual Artists, I am reminded of the journey each artist has taken to unravel. This exhibition is the culmination of every twist and turn these artists took to reveal parts of themselves that were difficult for them to understand. Within this journey, there were times when these artists had to travel to the most vulnerable spaces within themselves, often leaving them feeling undone. It was within this space that they were able to create. These artists used a range of tools to express, reveal, and eventually work through this unraveling and began to weave the next chapter of their lives with strength and possibility.

When you navigate this site, you will see a celebration of the hard work and dedication each of these students committed during the 2 year IBDP Visual Art Program. These artists have shared their stories in the hope that as a viewer, you will see a connection to your own experiences. The role of an artist is to create a shared sense of community and remind us of our humanity. It is the hope of these artists that you will find the strength in yourself to begin your own unraveling in order to reveal the parts of yourself that need understanding.

The IBDP Visual Arts program encompasses so much more than these beautiful pieces of artwork. The process, research, reflection and analysis required for the students to get to this final point is the most noteworthy aspect of their journey. I am so proud of what this group of artists have accomplished in these past 2 years that were filled with uncertainty and requiring constant adaptability. I hope you enjoy the artwork and find a piece of yourself in the vulnerability shared.

To my 2022 Artists, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for sharing your unraveling with me and your peers. You have all accomplished so much more than I think you knew was possible! I am so proud of your resilience, bravery, and compassion. I am certain that what you have learned from the process will guide you in this next chapter of your life.

The 2022 IBDP Visual Arts students wish to express their sincerest gratitude to everyone who has supported their artistic journey and made this exhibition possible.

For their ongoing support and understanding of the importance of studying the arts, a big thank you to our Head of School, Jane Camblin as well as the Upper School Administrative Team including Tim Kaiser, David Butler, Nathalie Millette and Duff Douglas. Thank you to our IBDP Coordinator Brian Hull for always understanding and helping our artists reach their goals.

Thank you to all of the visual arts teachers who encourage and inspire art education. Our students are a testament to your dedication and passion for the arts.

Thank you to the parents for the support and encouragement you have continually shown, along this artistic journey. You supported these young artists to find strength and their voice through the arts.

To William Lam and the facilities team, we are so grateful for the time and dedication you give to help support us and to make all of our visions possible throughout the 2 year program.

Although we were unable to carry out our plan to host the final exhibition off campus due to the pandemic, we are grateful for all of the people who were willing to help us fulfill our dream. Thank you to Ben Smith who helped us to connect with the school community to find a space and organize the show. Thank you to board member Brian Lau who also helped make this dream come true as well as Teresa Yung Wong who graciously offered her space to exhibit our students' work.. We would also like to thank CDNIS parent Kevin Lai and his firm L2 Capital Management for offering to help support our opening. We would also like to thank Keven Cheng and Danny Yang from architecture firm Bimcap for volunteering their time to work with our artists to design our off campus show as well as designing and creating our virtual show.

And lastly, a special thanks to the Upper School Visual Arts Assistants, Yukiko Wong & Iris Chang for their dedication to supporting these amazing artists and helping them endlessly to achieve their goals. They truly are the backbone of the Upper School Art Department and I am grateful to have them on my team. It is the dedicated people who support our vision as teachers and artists that enable us to celebrate the arts in our school.
