Purpose
Campbell County School District is committed to delivering a guaranteed and viable 6–12 science curriculum aligned with the 2023 Wyoming Content and Performance Standards (WYCPS) for Science. This curriculum ensures high-quality, data-informed instruction and assessment, with student learning as our central focus.
Rationale
The 2023 Wyoming Content and Performance Standards (WYCPS) for Science emphasize active student engagement in scientific and engineering practices from kindergarten through 12th grade.
These standards foster inquiry, exploration, and the development of scientifically literate citizens. They also provide a strong foundation for local decisions on curriculum, instruction, and assessment—better preparing students for college, careers, military service, or any path they choose to pursue.
Three-Dimensional Learning Framework
The WYCPS for Science are structured around three integrated dimensions:
Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs): Four domains—Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science—form the core content areas.
Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs): Seven concepts, such as patterns and cause and effect, that bridge disciplinary boundaries and deepen understanding.
Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs): Eight practices that reflect the behaviors of scientists and engineers, including:
Asking questions and defining problems
Developing and using models
Planning and carrying out investigations
Analyzing and interpreting data
Using mathematics and computational thinking
Wyoming Department Of Education
Constructing explanations and designing solutions
Engaging in argument from evidence
Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
This three-dimensional approach ensures that students not only acquire knowledge but also apply it in meaningful ways, fostering deeper understanding and skill development.
Implementation and Assessment:
Under the 2023 WYCPS, all students must be provided opportunities to learn the content standards. Performance standards specify the expected level of proficiency and are assessed through the district's assessment system. This structure ensures that students demonstrate both the knowledge and the ability to apply scientific concepts and practices effectively.
