The Hand in the Thorns
Anonymous
There was a layer of thorns,
the thickest, toughest, meanest kind,
with vines like snakes
and briars like razor blades.
It was seemingly impassible,
letting no light shine through its tangles and knots,
like a barrier, a blockade,
stopping you, holding you back.
And yet, through its snarls and twists,
its net of danger, pain, and suffering,
a hand reached through and touched the light.
Yes, a hand reached through.
A tattered and battered, ripped and frayed hand
pushed its way through, past the obstacle,
and grasped success.
Though his hand had struggled,
had been beaten up and beaten down,
it reached for the hope among the despair,
it reached for the flower among the thorns.
