Meet the Director!
Caitlan Phelps
Mrs. Phelps is Swift Creek Middle School's drama teacher and the director of this year's play. She grew up in Chesterfield, Virginia, and went to George Mason University and Savannah College of Art and Design.
Mrs. Phelps decided she wanted to be a drama teacher after she had studied English as an undergraduate student, then realized that she wanted to change her degree. Mrs. Phelps picked Meet The Creeps for this year's play because she has always wanted to do The Addams Family, but it wasn't appropriate for middle school. She said that the kids in the play are fantastic, and she can't wait for everyone to see them perform!
History of Valentine's Day:
Valentine's Day, also known as St. Valentine's Day, has been celebrated for over 1,500 years and takes place on February 14th. Most people assume that Valentine's Day began as a way to celebrate romance, but this wasn't the case until around the 14th century. There are many different myths about how the tradition started - some say St. Valentine of Rome married couples to save husbands from going to war, while others believe the holiday is named after St. Valentine of Terni. Celebrating Valentine's Day is very popular in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia, and it is also celebrated in Argentina, France, Mexico, South Korea, and more. Valentine's Day is now celebrated to show the appreciation we have for our loved ones.
Earlier this month, Swift Creek allowed students to purchase carnations and have them sent to a requested friend. They were sold for $1.50 and are being delivered on Valentine's Day.
Let's see who bought carnations!
Valerie Fox
Did you buy them anonymously? I put my name on them.
Was it a sweet note? It was a sweet note!
Why did you buy them? It was a kind way to show appreciation towards my friends.
Alexis Bittner
How many carnations did you buy? Six.
Were you anonymous when adding your name? I had one that was anonymous and the rest weren’t.
Was it a sweet note? Yes!
Why did you buy them? I care about my friends a lot and want them to know that!
Charlotte Paine
How many carnations did you buy? Three.
Were you anonymous when adding your name? One was but two of them were not.
Was it a sweet note? It was an "I’m better than anyone else" note!
Why did you buy them? To show friendship because my friends are great.
Anonymous
How many carnations did you buy? I bought two.
Were you anonymous when adding your name? No.
Was it a sweet note? Yes!
Why did you buy them? I wanted to get a gift for my friend on Valentine's Day!
