Intro to Theatre

Welcome to Introduction to Theatre! In this course, students will explore the many elements that make theatre a unique and collaborative art form. Students will develop an understanding of theatre history, performance, design, production, and the creative processes used to bring stories from the page to the stage.

Throughout the course, students will explore the fundamentals of acting, including improvisation, character development, stage presence, movement, and vocal expression. Students will also be introduced to the various roles involved in theatre production, including directing, playwriting, technical theatre, design, and performance. Through hands-on activities, students will learn how each element works together to create a successful theatrical experience.

Students will analyze dramatic texts, explore storytelling techniques, and develop skills in collaboration, communication, and creative problem-solving. Through performance activities, projects, and reflection, students will learn how theatre can be used to express ideas, explore different perspectives, and connect with audiences.

Students will also investigate the history and cultural significance of theatre while examining how theatrical styles, traditions, and innovations have evolved over time. By connecting theatre to other disciplines and real-world experiences, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the impact of storytelling and the performing arts.

By the end of the course, students will have a foundation in theatre vocabulary, performance skills, creative collaboration, and production processes. Introduction to Theatre encourages students to take creative risks, build confidence, and discover the role they can play in the world of theatre — whether onstage, backstage, or as an engaged audience member.
