Specialist Activities
Music - Mrs. Monke and Mrs. Thomforde
Week of April 13-17
Lesson 1:
Lullaby compositions
The definition of a lullaby is "a quiet, gentle song sung to send a child to sleep." You have studied two Native American lullabies in music class. First, click on the attached video to review and sing along with the two Native American lullabies.
Owlet, my owlet is sleeping
Owlet, my owlet is sleeping
Wee stars are twinkling in the sky
Mother is singing lullaby
Ho ho watanay
Ho ho watanay
Ho ho watanay
kee-o-kay-na, kee-o-kay-na
Oh oh little one
Oh oh little one
Oh oh little one
Now go to sleep, now go to sleep
You are going to compose your own lullaby today. Notice that there are not a lot of words in either of the Native American lullabies, and the words often repeat. Think about what you would say to a child to get them to go to sleep. Then add a tune, in a singing voice. Make sure it sounds gentle. And keep it simple! (Note that My Owlet only has 4 lines, and one of them is a repeat of the first line!)
Write down your lyrics and record yourself singing your lullaby (video or audio recording). Today is just a rough draft, so don't worry if your recording isn't perfect. You just want to make sure it is clear enough so you can review it later on in the week, when we continue to build on this assignment in our next lesson. I'm looking forward to hearing your lullabies!
