Before we really get started working on clay projects, let's get acquainted to the studio and the basics of working in clay! Click the link above.
The most tactile method of handbuilding. Artists shape the clay entirely by hand, using continuous pressure to "pinch" walls to a uniform thickness. It creates intimate, organic forms with a deep physical connection to the material.
Mug by Eric Beavers
A method focused on engineering and structure. Clay is rolled into flat sheets (slabs) that can be draped while soft or cut and joined like a template once stiff. This technique is ideal for geometric, architectural, and precise forms.
Sunshine Cobb
An ancient technique where clay is rolled into long ropes (coils) and stacked layer by layer. This allows for the slow, intentional growth of large-scale vessels and complex, undulating volumes.
The process of adding, subtracting, and manipulating solid clay to create 3D forms. This technique focuses on proportion and detail, requiring the piece to be hollowed out before firing to ensure survival in the kiln.
