Social Distancing. What now?

My main objective for students during this unprecedented time is to provide a creative outlet and lead them through meditative activities to lower stress. Art for me has always been the saving grace for when I've gone through hardships. It is therapeutic. It is a stress reliever. It is a way to pass the time without flooding your eyes with blue light. I hope to teach students that the arts have a place in our daily lives. Please watch the video, "Rooted in Love."

Week 1

Body Scan Meditation

Just find a comfortable seat and listen along!

Zentangles

Zentangles are meditative and creative drawing exercises. Start by drawing an outline (could be simple geometric shapes, or a complex representational drawing), divide it into sections, and draw a pattern in each section.

Week 2

How are you spending your time?

Create an iMovie trailer that illustrates how you are social distancing. We'll make more of these periodically.

Week 4

Quarantine Bake-Off!

It's my birthday! So I want you to spend a couple hours learning how to bake something you've never baked before. When you're done, upload a photo of what you made to the Google Classroom assignment. Below are a few of my favorite recipes. Enjoy!

Week 5

How can you take everyday objects like paper, nails, toothpicks, cups, and create something extraordinary? Can you create art out of ordinary things not commonly thought as art materials?

Your assignment is to do just that: create an extraordinary sculpture out of ordinary household items.

Week 6

Mandalas

Stephanie's talk is sub-titled "What I Learned from Making 10,000 Mandalas." Stephanie holds a strong belief that process-based art practices are powerful tools for transformative personal growth. Our harsh inner critic can be temporarily silenced by removing the focus on quality, so that anyone may receive the many physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits that art-making has to offer.

Week 7: Frida Kahlo

A Switch to

Choice Based Art

Teaching ceramics online has been a struggle. Students don't all have the same materials, resources, nor the same skills. For the first 6 weeks teaching online, I gave specific projects using specific materials and concepts. For the last few weeks of remote learning, we are switching to a Choice Based system. Each week the students will learn about a new artist and create a piece of art inspired by that person. Students are encouraged to spend more than a week on projects if they so choose (and skip the next week's artist). We began by looking at Frida Kahlo.

Week 10: Free Choice

Spend at least 90 minutes creating a piece of free-choice art. It can be a project you've already done, a continuation of your artist-inspired piece, or something totally new!

Reflections

"I have found a new meaning of art during this quarantine. I have found art to be somewhat therapeutic. I have found that art can be relaxing, and a good way to release stress. I have realized that you don't have to be good at art to enjoy it."

Natalia

"Some of my favorite projects we were assigned this semester were the Mandala, Zentangle and the Paper Pottery: they gave me peace of mind, and allowed me to be able to take an hour of silence and let my creative side take over. "

Penny

"Making art has been an important part of my life during quarantine; it has helped to keep me grounded, relieve stress, and give me something to do every day."

Anya

"I’m  glad I was taking an art class during quarantine. It gave me the time to sit down and explore. Art has certainly been a savior during the pandemic."

Lucy

"The assignments that made me feel the calm and peace that I felt in the classroom were the self lead projects. They brought me joy and peace. They made me feel like I was in control. Something that seemed so foreign during this time."

Gwyn

"If this online learning happens next year, I think everyone should take some sort of art class. I think it will help kids escape and then be happier and more focused going into core classes."
