Hello families and students, I miss you all and hope you are doing well.

On this page I will share fun gross motor activities you can do at home to keep your bodies moving and strong!

Take care,

Gross Motor Spider Web

You will need:

- Chalk (or painter’s tape)

- Pretend spider

Draw a chalk spider web by writing a large X. Next draw another X perpendicular to the first one. You will end up with what looks like an eight lined snowflake. Beginning in the middle, connect the lines with arches increasing in size to create the finished web.

Now that you have your web, there are several games you can play:

– Use the web as a balance beam. Add a challenge by trying to walk the lines while balancing the pretend spider on your head!

– Throw the spider into a space on the web to play spider hopscotch. Pretend you are insects as you navigate from one side of the web to the other without stepping on the sticky web lines or the space of the web with the spider in it!

– Write numbers, letters, shapes, or sight words inside each space of the web. Have your child identify the information for you as they step on each space. You can also toss the pretend spider into the web and ask the child to name the letter, number, shape, or sight word that it landed on.

Week of 5/18

Print the bug picture cards and cut into cards with one bug on each. Then take turns choosing a card and pretending to be the bug on the card.

Caterpillar – Pretend to be caterpillars by inching forward on their bellies in an army crawl. Then, have them get into a “cocoon” (lying on their backs, curled up tight into a ball with arms wrapped around knees). Have them hold this position for a count of 10.

Butterfly – Have kids roll onto their tummies, flutter their arms and legs up off the floor like they’re flying.

Worm – Wiggle like a worm on the ground.

Grasshopper – Start by crouching down low to the ground and then springing up, jumping like a grasshopper!

Spider – Tip toe like a spider on a web.

Snail – Have kids start in child’s pose on a smooth wood floor. Have them lift their upper bodies off the floor, sliding themselves forward on the floor using only their arms/hands.

Week of 5/11

Backyard gross motor fun!

-Log roll down a hill or across the grass

-Chalk obstacle course on driveway

Pop Bubbles with your feet

Goal: To improve balance and coordination

  • Your child will need to concentrate to target those bubbles especially to stand on one leg and pop the bubble with the other foot!

  • See if you child can balance long enough to pop one - or more!

Make it fun:

  • Try calling out “left” and “right” to have them use that foot

Week of 5/4

Week of 4/27

Dandelion Counting Race

Using sidewalk chalk make a grid, a column for each child if your kiddo is playing with a sibling.

Run around the yard and pick dandelions and race to fill up your column with dandelions.

Each grid spot in your column has to be filled with X number of dandelions.

X can be determined by your child’s age or you can pick a number that your child is working up to counting.

If your child is playing solo, you could put 1 dandelion in the first grid space, 2 in the second, 3 in the third...and so on.

Week of 4/20

Try to pick a day this week to go on a nature walk: Go for a walk outside and take a route that encourages walking up/down hills, navigating along obstacles like tree branches, walking on uneven terrain like rocks, and stepping over puddles! While you're out there you can also work on your math skills by using this checklist to count what you see in nature on a Spring day!

Week of 4/13

NEIGHBORHOOD SCAVENGER HUNT.pdf

Week of 4/6

Superman!!

Goal: Core Strength

  • Have your child lie on their belly and lift arms and legs off the floor. See how long they can hold it. Try having them move their arms and “fly”.

Make it fun by:

  • Can they hold a ball with their hands or feet??

  • You can have them give you 10 high fives to encourage both hands off the floor.

  • Say the ABC’s
