Play is Learning!

Written by Anna Russo

Should I really just be letting my kids play all day?

YES!! Here’s why:

With older children being sent worksheets and assignments, many parents have been wondering how to keep their preschooler engaged in learning at home. The answer is easy, just play! While it may seem simple, the act of playing is actually incredibly complex. By playing with toys, games, and regular old household items, children are learning to make sense of the world around them. Just by playing children are boosting their language, mathematical, physical, and social emotional skills naturally.

For all children, but especially preschoolers, play and learning are not separate. Younger children’s brains are not ready for lots of formal tasks that we associate with learning at higher grades- like worksheets and flashcards. Research has actually shown that preschool children learn pre-academic skills, like counting and vocabulary, better through play than more structured education. By learning through play, young children are actually more invested in their learning, and often don’t even realize that they are learning at all!

It is also important to remember the difference between screen time and play. While screen time is more passive, like just watching a video, play is more engaging and interactive. It’s totally okay for children to have some screen time, especially while our society figures out working from home. But also be sure that your kids have ample opportunities to play, and try to take time to play with them too!

The following document breaks down play into specific activities and how to capitalize on it to enhance play and language and motor skills throughout their day. For example, during bath time, using PlayDoh, using blocks/Legos, cars and trucks, and reading stories etc.

"Scientists have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain, unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions!" Dr. Karyn Purvis
