Six P's

Required Components: The Six Ps

  • P1: Proposal – The initial phase of the project consists of a proposal for the project, proposal approval, group division of labor worksheet, the necessary paperwork including parent/guardian consent, mentor agreement & advisor agreement and a formal letter of intent summarizing the project for the portfolio. The proposal includes a high-quality driving question, as well as a projection as to how mathematics will be part of the project itself.

  • P2: Product/Service + Fieldwork – A product or service related to the chosen project topic requiring a minimum of 10 hours of fieldwork outside of school. Each student will work with a mentor in his/her chosen field (not a staff member or family member and preferably the internship employer). The product or service must be a tangible or documented service to the school or community.

  • P3: Paper – The first required paper is a “presearch” paper covering a review of literature of necessary length about the Capstone Project. This “presearch” paper is a formal paper that reviews subject literature and proves that there is a problem worth solving and that resources exist to aid the student in determining a viable solution.

  • P4: Portfolio – The portfolio is documentation and reflection of the entire Capstone process created in an electronic format via Schoology. It will contain all letters and forms, final reflection research paper, activity journal, a resume, artifacts from all 4 years of high school, and any other items/ documents from the Capstone Project. Each student must turn in an individual Capstone portfolio. The portfolio will begin within the student’s Freshman English class.

  • P5: Promotion (Poster) – Promotion is an opportunity to publicize the project to students, staff, and the community. Promotion can occur in a variety of formats to include digital marketing or hard-copy product. Additionally, each student or group that wishes to compete for Capstone honors will produce a professional poster to display at least one week prior to the final presentations. Select Capstones will be commemorated by hanging their posters in the school.

  • P6: Presentations – This is the final component of the Capstone project. There are two required portions: 1. Panel Presentation will consist of 3-5 judges (community members, internship employers, and staff), evidence of mathematical practices, and self-assessment and reflection. 2. Senior Capstone Expo will consist of an oral presentation and a visual display featuring the project.
