Need Tech Support?
It is not usually an issue related to the Chromebook itself.
It can be caused if the network your child is using is NOT high-speed and cannot support the call. This can also happen if other people in the home are using the WIFI or hotspot to stream on their devices. Try limiting other people's WIFI usage during your child's Google Meet times.
If your child is still having issues, have your child close the other browser tabs and applications that may be using up resources.
Lastly, if you are using a VPN, attempt to disconnect from it, as it may be slowing down the connection.
If the above steps do not work, please submit a help ticket by clicking the yellow box at the top of this page.
Google Meet is an online video conferencing tool that teachers and students will use as we navigate hybrid learning this year. Teachers will have the ability to share the contents of their screen so all students, whether they're remote or in person, can see what is being presented. In addition, students can see the teacher's face and the teacher can see and hear their remote learning students.
Your child's teacher will invite your child to a Google Meet by posting the link in the banner of that teacher's Google Classroom page. Please see the image below to see where the meet link is posted. Your child just needs to click the link to join. A Meet link can also be added through Google Calendar or shared via email (only available to students in Grades 7-12)
Your child will see a screen like the image below. They should click the "Join Now" button.
No, the teacher needs to start the meet and be present before any students will be allowed to join. The Meet will give students a message that they cannot join until the teacher joins. The teacher will also be the last person to leave the Meet. Once that happens, the students can no longer access the Google Meet.
No, students do not have the ability to start their own Google Meet. Only teachers can do that.
Once your child is on a Google Meet, have them scroll down on the track pad. A white menu bar will display on the bottom of the screen. The video camera icon will be white, which means your child's face is showing. Click on the video camera icon and it will turn red and have a line through it. Now your child's face will not show. To show it again, click on the red video icon again and it will turn white, and your child's face will be seen on the Google Meet. See image at the bottom for buttons and labels.
Once your child is on a Google Meet, have them scroll down on the track pad. A white menu bar will display on the bottom of the screen. The microphone icon will be white, which means your child's voice will be heard, along with anything else going on in the background. If the teacher asks the students to mute their microphone, click on the microphone icon and it will turn red and have a line through it. Now your child's voice will not be heard. See image at the bottom for buttons and labels.
At the end of a Google Meet, have them scroll down on the track pad. A white menu bar will display on the bottom of the screen. Have your child click on the red phone receiver to hang up. See image at the bottom for buttons and labels.
To rejoin, your child should go back to their Google Classroom that is hosting the meet and click on the Google Meet link in the banner or in the Stream.
