Was dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima justifiable? This quandary has been long debated among historians. In our video, we hope to explore the reasons that led to the fateful event and ask you the same question. Was it justifiable? Was it necessary?
Now, it is easy to say that atomic bombs should not be used due to radiation sickness, injuries, and deaths caused. However, before the bombing, it was more difficult to recognize these negative effects. For this reason, we chose to explore the political motives for using nuclear weapons to try to get closer to finding the answer to the question: Was the use of an atomic bomb justifiable?
Through our video, we have shared different motives for dropping the atomic bomb by using a scale to symbolize the Scales of Justice. We added rocks to the scale to represent each reason, with the size of the rock indicating the “weight” of the opinion. As the video progresses, the scale will tip to show how the general view of the bomb changed before and after the bombings.
We wish to equip you with the knowledge necessary to draw your own conclusions. We see value in your opinions, so we have provided a Padlet where we hope you can share your ideas.
Through this Padlet, we aim to foster open communication and new perspectives within our community. We recognize that communication is crucial, since with effective communication, the US may have come to a different conclusion during WWII. Even though we cannot change the events of August 6, 1945, with open minds we can learn about the causes of this event, to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself.
