World Language Courses

The World Language department believes that language is what unifies the world. The ability to communicate in not only one’s native language, but also in the language of others is an important tool for the future. The knowledge of various languages helps a student in the following ways:

  • To add to personal knowledge and growth

  • To assist with further understanding of English

  • To prepare for a diverse and ever-changing world and work place

  • To expand knowledge, understanding and appreciation of culture through music, art, drama; literature and history

  • To facilitate interactions with people of various backgrounds, both within the community and elsewhere


Spanish 1 (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 9,10,11,12

Prerequisite - 8th Grade English Teacher Approval (to take in 9th grade)


Students enrolling in Spanish I must have been proficient in their 8th grade ELA standards or have instructor permission. Good organizational skills will aid student learning.


Spanish 1 is a two-semester beginning course to learn the language, geography, and culture of the Spanish speaking countries of the world. The expectations of this class are to communicate through speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension of written and spoken Spanish.


Spanish 2 (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 10,11,12

Prerequisite- successful completion of Spanish I with proficiency reached in all Priority Standards


This course is a continuation of communication by speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension of written and spoken Spanish. The focus of this class is on further communication with the complexity of texts and writing prompts increasing.


Spanish 3 (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 11, 12

Prerequisite- successful completion of Spanish II with proficiency reached in all Priority Standards


Spanish 3 is a course to further the language skills that were developed in Spanish 1 and 2. Spanish 3 also studies world issues and requires critical thought about world problems and solutions. Strong Spanish reading and speaking skills are recommended.


Spanish 4 (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 12

Prerequisite- successful completion of Spanish III with proficiency reached in all Priority Standards


Spanish 4 is a continuation of Spanish 3. Spanish 4 studies historical world issues and requires critical thought about historical events and their impact on the world today. Strong Spanish reading and speaking skills are recommended.
