Mathematics Courses

On the precedent that Mathematics is fundamental to every individual, the Mathematics Department exists to enlighten, encourage, assist, strengthen, instill, stimulate, and develop desirable attitudes, appreciations, and practical aspects of Mathematics.

ALGEBRA 1 (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 9,10

Prerequisite: Completion of 8th grade math or recommendation by 8th grade math teacher

Course Description: Students will learn the basic structure and techniques in algebra and how to apply them to a variety of mathematical situations. Algebra I is designed to lay the groundwork for future study in higher mathematics.

AREAS OF STUDY:

1. Exponents

2. Operations with integers

3. Solving equations and applications in problem solving

4. Working with polynomials and factoring

5. Operations and equations with algebraic fractions

6. Solving inequalities and applications to problem solving

7. Graphing lines and graphing systems of equations in two variables

8. Graphing inequalities

 9. Rational & irrational numbers

10. Square roots & quadratics

GEOMETRY (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 9, 10, 11

Prerequisite: Algebra I

Course Description:  A study which deals with figures made up of points, lines, angles, and planes.  This course integrates content with meaningful applications and connections to real life.  Students become logical stressing proofs and measurements using algebraic computations.

ALGEBRA 2 (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite:  Completion of Algebra 1 and Geometry; may enroll concurrently with Geometry with teacher permission

• Graphing Calculator strongly recommended

Course Description: The  study  of more  advanced Algebraic  topics, such as quadratic  equations, imaginary numbers, progressions, inequalities, the binomial theorem, logarithms, and graphing calculators

PRE-CALCULUS (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 11,12

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1, Geometry, & Algebra 2

Course Description: This course is intended to prepare students for calculus or advanced science courses. The course covers logarithms and exponential functions, trigonometric functions, complex numbers, analytic geometry, and topics in the theory of equations. A graphing calculator is required.

CALCULUS (2 semesters)

Credit: 1

Grade Placement: 12

Prerequisite: Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus with “C” average or consent of instructor

Course Description: Students whose first college math is expected to be Calculus are advised to take this course. Analytic Geometry is distributed throughout the course, and a knowledge of plane and solid geometry is necessary to work on word problems. Some of the topics covered are functions and derivatives, differentiation of algebraic functions, applications of the derivative, differentials, the indefinite integral, and the definite integral, differentiation of transcendental functions, and methods of integration.

Math Literacy (1 semester)

Credit: 0.5

Grade Placement: 12

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 1, Geometry, & Algebra 2

Course Description: This class is a review of all math topics, from fractions and decimals, to Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and some pre calculus concepts. This class is designed for the college bound student that is NOT going into a math or science major, but will have to take the Math Placement Test at their respective college.  In this course, the student will take the ALEKS math placement test with the hopes of testing into a college level math class.
