Why study French?


Following a course in GCSE French allows students to enjoy and benefit from language learning. Students will be able to use their linguistic knowledge and understanding in addition to their skills in French to help them take their place in a multilingual global society. Through learning French GCSE, students are exposed to a course which enables them to explore relevant themes and topics while connecting cultures and breaking down barriers to communicating and understanding.

Course Content and Summary of Assessment

French continues to be the most popular language GCSE according to the most recent British Council Languages for the Future report. Through the course learners develop the ability to communicate effectively through all four linguistic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing; each skill is weighted equally in terms of assessment and are examined in.

Year 11 at the end of the two year GCSE course:


Speaking 25% Listening 25% Reading 25% Writing 25%


The examination is available in Foundation and Higher Tiers. Candidates can be entered for either tier or a combination of the two,

The course is divided into topic areas which enable linguists to develop their knowledge of the French language while celebrating differences and similarities between cultures. Such topics include:

French is considered by many to be the language of culture: fashion, art, music, cinema, literature and fine cuisine. Taking French GCSE opens the door to all of these things, as well as a variety of careers. While French can be studied for the intrinsic value and pleasure of learning another language, it can also be seen as a professional tool in an increasingly competitive marketplace. The number of occupations, which require communication skills in at least one foreign language, grows ever wider. French can be a very useful asset in such diverse fields as journalism, industry, global finance, engineering, business and law, as well as education and tourism.

KS4 & KS5 Paris, Disney and Versailles Visit

Organised educational visits to support the GCSE and A-Level course aim to give learners the opportunity to gain further confidence in their speaking skills, and to enhance their understanding not only of the language, but also the culture of France. GCSE French continues to be a highly successful qualification in Caerleon Comprehensive in terms of student interest, motivation and achievement.
