English

English is at the heart of a student’s GCSE studies as developing literacy skills will allow students to access many other GCSE subjects. Students will work towards two GCSEs in English: Language and Literature. In Year 10, students are allocated a place in one of the English groups which are set according to attainment and results at Key stage 3 in reading, writing and oracy. In Year 10, students will study for their Literature GCSE and will sit the external examinations in May. Through the study of literature, students will develop their language skills and will study for this examination exclusively in year 11. English and English Literature GCSE are assessed using a combination of controlled assessment and examinations
