The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application for all sources of Federal and State Financial Aid Programs including Federal Student Loans and Federal and State Grants. When most people talk about having student loans, they are typically talking about federal student loans obtained through the FAFSA. To complete your FAFSA a student and at least one parent or guardian or caretaker must have an FSA ID. The FSA ID will be used to sign your FAFSA and Financial Aid materials. Parents or Guardians will need separate accounts.
Important Note: The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and federal student aid process are currently experiencing some challenges due to recent updates and changes at the federal level. These changes have affected how the application works, how information is processed, and the overall timeline for financial aid.
As a result, families may notice delays, technical issues, or differences in how financial aid eligibility is calculated compared to previous years. Schools and financial aid offices are continuing to adjust to these updates while working to provide accurate information as it becomes available.
We encourage families to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible, monitor their application status, and stay in communication with college financial aid offices.
Wisconsin TIP Grants provide Financial Aid to low-income and disadvantaged Wisconsin students to help reduce the amount of loans, work-study, or unmet need. These funds are awarded on a first come first serve basis.
To be eligible, students must:
Be attending college at least part-time
Be a first-time freshman
Meet specific criteria (see link or application for details)
The Universities of Wisconsin website has an excellent "one stop shop" for financial aid questions and resources for students planning to attend a UW school.
Always research the college you are planning to attend to see if they offer their own scholarship application, most do! Check early and be mindful of application deadlines.
