Applying to colleges, especially within the University of Wisconsin (UW) System follows a fairly standard process, but it’s important for students and families to understand each step and timeline. Students typically apply using the Universities of Wisconsin application, the Common Application, or whatever application site the campus uses. Applications generally open in late summer, with priority and regular deadlines varying by school. It is strongly recommended that students apply early, especially if they are interested in more selective campuses or specific programs, such as UW-Madison or the University of Minnesota.
When reviewing applications, most universities use a holistic admissions process. This means they consider multiple factors rather than relying on a single measure. Academic performance is the most important component, including GPA, grade trends, and the rigor of courses taken. While all UW schools are test-optional, ACT or SAT scores may still be submitted if a student feels they strengthen their application. Within the UW system, students are no longer required to obtain a certain score for admission, but schools outside of the UW system vary on their policies.
In addition to academics, admissions offices review personal statements or essays, which allow students to share their experiences, goals, and what they would contribute to the campus community. This is a student's opportunity to shed light on challenges, triumphs, and any other information that may be relevent to who a student is. Extracurricular activities, leadership roles, work experience, and involvement in community service are also considered, as they help provide a fuller picture of the student. Most UW schools do not require letters of recommendation, but some programs or campuses may allow or request them. Students should always check the specific requirements for each school they are applying to.
After submitting an application, students can typically track their status through the university’s portal. Admissions decisions are released on a rolling basis or by specific notification dates, depending on the campus. Once accepted, students will need to confirm their enrollment by the univiersity's deadline and complete additional steps such as housing applications, orientation registration, and financial aid verification.
Overall, the UW System is looking for students who have challenged themselves academically, demonstrated responsibility and growth, and are prepared to succeed in college. Taking time to plan ahead, meet deadlines, and present a well-rounded application will help students put their best foot forward.
If you’re in the top 5% (UW-Madison) or 10% (all other UW schools) of your class at the end of junior year, you qualify for guaranteed admission. Students must still complete an application to access The Wisconsin Guarantee.
Direct Admit is a program that allows students to automatically be admitted to 10 of the 13 schools in the UW System based on their GPA. In the spring of Junior year, students and famillies will recieve communication regarding opting in or out of Direct Admit in Skyward. Cadott High School then sends opted in student transcripts to Direct Admit for reveiw. Based on GPA, students will then receive admission offers from the universities they qualify for. Students may then accept admission offers if they would like. Participating in Direct Admit does not commit a student to any university unless they accept an admissions offer. ALL GPA's qualify for at least some UW schools, so any student can participate! UW-Eau Claire, UW-Madison, and UW-Lacrosse do not participate in Direct Admit and require a standard application.
