What is Academic and Career Planning (ACP)?
Academic and Career Planning, or ACP, is a student-driven, adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based visions for post-secondary success, obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills.
Why are we doing this?
PI 26.01 Applicability and purpose.
(1) Under s. 121.02 (1) (m), Stats., every school board shall provide access to an education for employment program approved by the state superintendent. Under s. 115.28 (59), Stats., the state superintendent shall ensure that every school board is providing academic and career planning services to pupils enrolled in grades 6 to 12 in the school district, beginning in the 2017-2018 school year.
How was this plan developed?
A committee was formed from the school board, staff representatives from each department, an administration member, members of pupil services, and the director of pupil services. Surveys were sent out to parents, staff, and students on their ideas on necessary career and academic planning opportunities. The committee went over the survey data, reviewed three other school districts’ Academic and Career Plans, then created a detailed list of tasks that students will need to complete at each grade level. The plan was submitted to the Board for approval.
How will the plan adapt and change?
A committee will meet annually to review the Cadott Academic and Career Plan, analyze data, and make necessary revisions to ensure the plan effectively meets the needs of the students, parents, and employers in the community.
How will ACP be implemented?
Through a combination of classroom activities, career-based learning opportunities, work-based learning, and independent exploration, students will increase their self-awareness as well as develop an understanding of different career pathways and the knowledge/skills needed to succeed in each. All students in grades 6-12 will develop, and update, an individualized Academic and Career Plan so that, by the time they graduate, they have identified a career pathway, developed the necessary skills, and are prepared to take the next steps toward pursuing that path.
How will staff be trained to implement ACP?
Staff will be trained, during inservice and/or staff meetings, on the ACP process and their role in its implementation.
How will parents be involved in the Academic and Career Planning?
Parents will have several opportunities throughout the school year to be involved in various aspects of their child’s academic and career planning by participating in individual conferences, post-secondary planning events, collaborative four-year planning, and more. They will also have access to updates and information about ACP activities through social media posts, newsletter articles, and the school webpage.
What connections does the district have with postsecondary opportunities for students?
Students have postsecondary credit opportunities through transcripted credit agreements with Chippewa Valley Technical College, the Start College Now Program, the Early College Credit Program, CVTC High School Academies, and Advanced Placement Courses.
What supports are offered within the district for special populations?
Students receiving special education services participate in transition planning as a required component of their individualized education plan. ACP information will be shared with IEP team members for consideration when developing transition plans to support student postsecondary pursuits.
Labor Market Information
Local, regional, and state labor market information will be used to ensure that students are aware of, and prepared to meet, the needs of the current and projected job market. The district will collaborate with local business and industry, higher education, and community organizations to provide relevant ACP services and opportunities to help students explore, and gain experience in, their areas of interest.
