Glengormley High School opened in September 1971 drawing the majority of its pupils from the wider Newtownabbey area but also serving areas in Belfast, Ballyclare and Antrim. The school has an enrolment number of 1250 but in 2018, when the present principal Mr. Ricky Massey took up post, the number of pupils enrolled was just over half that figure.
As part of measures to drive school improvement and realise a new vision for the school as one which served all children in the community, the Board of Governors took the decision to ballot parents on the subject of Integrated status. In March 2020, 71% of parents who participated in the ballot voted ‘YES’ for Transformation and the school immediately began to plan for Integrated status, developing an initial three-year Transformation Plan to cover the period 2020-2023.
The school was formally recognised at Integrated College Glengormley from September 2022. In the four years since Integration was placed on the agenda, the college has successfully increased its enrolment to almost 1,000 pupils and the pupil body is becoming more representative of the local community.
Recorded in the autumn of 2022 the videos below provide some insight into the Transformation of Integrated College Glengormley. In the first video principal Ricky Massey highlights the essential role that vision plays within the process and Senior Teacher Ms. Natalie Clarke subsequently outlines the importance of the Transformation Plan in delivering effective whole-school change.
