As in other professions, the complexity of teaching requires continued growth and development in order for teachers to remain current. Continuing to stay informed and increasing their skills allows teachers to become ever more effective and to exercise leadership among their colleagues. The academic disciplines themselves evolve, and educators constantly refine their understanding of how to engage students in learning; thus, growth in content, pedagogy, and information technology are essential to good teaching. Networking with colleagues through such activities as joint planning, study groups, and lesson study provides opportunities for teachers to learn from one another. These activities allow for job-embedded professional development. In addition, professional educators increase their effectiveness in the classroom by belonging to professional organizations, reading professional journals, attending educational conferences, and taking university classes. As they gain experience and expertise, educators find ways to contribute to their colleagues and to the profession.
(Danielson, C. 2013)
One way that I have been able to grow professionally has been through my ability to differentiate my lessons to each individual student. As I learn and grow and become a teacher, I am learning how to change my instruction and provide tools to each student in order for them to meet set standards and achieve success. The artifact to the left is of one of the more recent lesson plans that I have created in which it is differentiated for various students in the class. These differentiation come with tools meant to build the students towards success.
As time goes by, I hope that I will always be growing professionally and becoming more of an expert in my field. Because of the university I am attending, I have been able to grow professionally in many ways. One of the most important skills that I have learned as I have studied to become a teacher was learning how to break down standards. During my Language Arts Method Course, I was able to analyze the state standards and break it up so I would be able to analyze what students are able to learn, understand, and know. This document of analyzing these standards has allowed me to gain expertise in this field.
