A smoothly functioning classroom is a prerequisite to good instruction and high levels of student engagement. Teachers establish and monitor routines and procedures for the smooth operation of the classroom and the efficient use of time. Hallmarks of a well-managed classroom are that instructional groups are used effectively, non-instructional tasks are completed efficiently, and transitions between activities and management of materials and supplies are skillfully done in order to maintain momentum and maximize instructional time. The establishment of efficient routines, and teaching students to employ them, may be inferred from the sense that the class "runs itself."

In my Senior Practicum class, my mentor teacher has many procedures outlined for the students in order for them to progress. One procedure that she has that makes her class run smoothly is a morning routine. Every morning, the students come into class, put their chair down, and get to work on the morning work that they were assigned. Then they wait for the morning announcement, say the pledge, do a lunch count, and continue working until they are dismissed to put their coats and backpacks away. The teacher then will dismiss the class by groups to put their belonging s away. This morning routine helps the class start off smoothly. They are quietly working on their assignment and they are in a professional behavioral mood to start the day.
One method that I would like to include in my classroom so that is runs smoothly is a class schedule. This class schedule would ensure that the students know what we are doing for the day and it keeps us moving on time as we work. Having a class schedule is not only beneficial for the teacher, but also for the students. It eases their minds and lessens their anxiety as they prepare for the day. They know what is coming and have a routine that is easier to get used to.
A class schedule also keeps the teacher in line for what subjects to go over and when. It helps the teacher put all that they wan to teach their students in a day on a schedule that keeps the class going and on task. I know that having a class schedule would maximize instructional time and keep the class productive as we work.
