Boulder HS 2020 Cross Country Season

Announcements - Fall 2020

Air Quality Issues

Missing practice because of concern about the air quality is perfectly acceptable so long as you notify me. Due to the fires, the air quality in Boulder has been hovering around 'unhealthy for sensitive groups.' If you do fall into that category I would like you to stay home. I'm trying to monitor it. If it reaches a warning level for all groups we'll likely cancel practice due to lack of indoor options.

COVID Health Screening

Daily health screening is required in order to participate in any practice or meet. Please be sure to take your temperature and fill out the form at least one hour before the activity. View the BVSD Screening Process document for additional information.

Cross Country is a no cut running sport in high school. Boulder High School's Cross Country enjoyed participation by 130 student athletes last year. Athletes competed in 5km (3.1 miles) on various terrain. Our varsity races typically consist of 7 runners per team where 5 runners score. Our JV races are not normally limited in numbers and usually score the top 5 runners from each team.

We practice daily 4pm after school at Boulder High. Currently we are meeting by the bridge to the track. Non school days, practices locations and times will be updated through our email list. We do not practice on Sundays. All athletes are expected to attend all practices on weekdays and all meets. Exceptions can be made under certain circumstances (e.g., SAT testing), but please try to schedule testing on non-competition days. Schedule family trips and college visits around competitions. Saturday cross-country meets are in the morning, so you can fly out to visit a college that afternoon. You are excused from class 15 minutes before the bus leaves.

The Boulder High School Cross Country program has produced numerous lifelong runners many of whom currently stay invested in the program. Additionally, in recent years, the program has seen many of it’s athletes continue on to various prestigious running programs like the University of Oregon and the University of Colorado. Boulder High has also graduated world class athletes like Mike Machinko and Melody Fairchild. Considered by many the greatest high school runner of all time, Melody’s national records in the mile and two mile were only recently broken. Her cross country national record remains untouched. Melody is very involved in the Boulder youth running community (www.melodyfairchild.com) continues to support our Boulder HS program in any way she can.

2020 Cross Country Season During COVID-19 Pandemic

A Note from Head Coach, Geo Tam - August 2020

We are thrilled we have been granted a season.

We are following all protocols set by Boulder County Health, BVSD, CHSAA, and the state.

This will be the likely format for races under these rules:

  • Day one: Dual meet - Open/JV only. Maximum of 25 per gender per school.

  • Day two: Up to 7 teams. - Varsity only. Max of 7 per gender per school.

This means that we can only have 32 students of each gender racing each week. If we have larger numbers than that, I will introduce a rotation so that you may race one race and rest the next.

In addition to these race rules, our practices are limited to groups of 25.

Under the current guidelines, the larger the team, the less opportunities there will be for everyone to participate fully. Before signing up for XC this year, please ask yourself if you can commit your heart to the sport and to the team. Each year, we have students signed up who don't want to be there. I've had the pleasure of watching many of these students find out that they can really love running! Unfortunately, this year, if you find you aren't yet grateful for the opportunity to run, you may be taking away opportunities from someone who is. I don't wish to scare anyone away; I hope that those of you who are wondering if you can commit your heart use this to find that spark. If you can't yet find that spark, I would still love to see you next year!

While we remain a no cut sport, we are holding athletes to a high standard this year due to the restrictions in place. Failure to adhere to team rules and attendance will result in dismissal from the team. A team contract will be given to students to sign.
