Library News: Summer is almost here and books are due! However, there are several resources in your child's Friday Folder to keep them engaged in reading this summer. Please look for these and encourage your child to start reading now and logging minutes in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. Also the 2018 NBES Book Race begins this week! Any homerooms whose students turn in ALL books or paid for lost ones by May 18th will win and ice cream party!! Lastly, the last day to reach your AR goal is May 18th. Students who have met 3 AR goals this year will be attending an AR field trip on May 21st for 3rd-5th and May 23rd for K-2nd.
Each year during KPREP, the state allows us to keep a "Good Faith Checklist" for the students to record their effort on the state assessment. Above you will see the version we use in 5th grade. Each day your student will receive a checkmark or an x in the categories listed. Students who demonstrate a good faith effort will be rewarded after the KPREP testing cycle is complete with an in-school reward. Students are not told of their progress during testing. The good faith checklist can only be shared with students AFTER the KPREP has left the building (after testing is over). So it is essential that you encourage your child to do their best every day of state testing.
We assessed over our final informative text standards yesterday (Thursday, May 10). For the remainder of the year, we will be doing a novel study on "Where The Red Fern Grows." We will read 2-3 chapters per day as a class while conducting discussion and completing activities that coincide with each chapter. This unit will help review over story elements such as plot, theme, character comparison, and setting. This includes the following standards:
RL.5.1 - Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
RL.5.2 - Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
RL.5.3 - Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact)
We are in the home stretch of standards this week. Every standard will have been covered by the commencement of KPREP testing on May 14th. Any time that can be spent at home on either Education Galaxy, Moby Max, or Prodigy will be of great benefit during this week or testing week.

+ After KPREP, we will be creating terrariums, a closed environment for plants. + This involves using a CLEAR container (you can see through) with a lid. + If it is glass, it cannot be transported on the bus] + A Gallon is the suggested size. Half a gallon is the smallest size. + Students MUST be able to get their hands in the opening of the container to put the dirt, plants, etc, into it. + If a student brings their own container, they will get to take home their terrarium to keep. + If they do not bring a container in, they will make a group terrarium that the teacher will keep. -->Students need to bring in $1 to pay for their high quality potting soil they will put in their terrarium.
The Science standards we will be covering during this unit are: SC-05-5.a - Classify matter based on physical properties, including mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid & gas), relative density (sinking & floating), solubility in water, & the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electrical energy.
Chrome Tablets on Mondays - DON'T FORGET!! - Chrome tablets on Mondays in Social Studies and Science. Use are using the Moby Max & also our new Education Galaxy program. If students want to bring ear buds or low profile headphones every Monday, they may do so. They are allowed to leave them in their cubbies if they wish.
We continue to use the DoJo behavior monitoring system. It is a great recording tool as we reward positive behavior with positive DoJos. Therefore, students that choose to use behaviors that not appropriate, will receive negative DoJos. We will continue to model correct behaviors as we redirect bad choices, but now those choices will result in weekly refresher courses based on behavior. These classes will emphasize Leader in Me Principals as well as help students see that positive change can bring about positive results.
