What is We Can Work?
The We Can Work (WCW) contracts are funded by Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) to provide work based learning experience, as directed by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) for students with a disability (SWD), ages 16 through 21, who are in high school, and either potentially eligible for or recipients of DOR services.
The WCW DOR Student Services work experience consists of short-term placements to gain experience in the workplace. Work experience may include paid employment and work exploration. They may also result in the development of any of the following: vocational direction, appropriate work attitudes, ethics, interpersonal skills, speed, and accuracy as well as some occupational skills.
WCW provides pre-employment training, on the job training through employer partners and follow up services for high school students that qualify for services. WCW students are hired by Burbank Unified School District (BUSD), earn minimum wage during the training period and are covered by Workers Compensation Insurance through BUSD. Burbank business partners (worksites) have agreed to provide a training site for students to develop work skills and learn about the expectations of the world of work.
Students are provided with training to prepare them for a basic job interview and the expectations of the worksite.
Worksites are not obligated to participate in the WCW program and can opt out of the program at any time.
Worksites have the final say in accepting or not accepting a student worker following a basic interview.
The WCW program is an opportunity and not an entitlement of services.
