What is Workability?
Workability is a program funded by a grant obtained from the California Department of Education (CDE). Workability 1 provides pre-employment training, on the job training through employer partners and follow up services for high school special education students. Workability students are hired by Burbank Unified School District (BUSD), earn minimum wage and are covered by Workers Compensation Insurance through BUSD. Burbank business partners (worksites) have agreed to provide a training/work site for students to develop work skills and learn about the expectations of the world of work.
Students are provided with pre-employment training to prepare them for a basic job interview and the expectations of the worksite.
Worksites are not obligated to participate in the Workability program and can opt out of the program at any time.
Worksites have the final say in accepting or not accepting a student worker following a basic interview.
Workability is not a mandated special education transition service.
The Workability program is an opportunity and not an entitlement of services.
Workability services are not mandated by the IEP and should not be confused with transition services, which are mandated by state and federal law and are delivered by staff outlined in the student’s IEP.
