10. Lunches can be prepaid!
If you would like to avoid sending lunch money or a check to school with your first grader, you are welcome to pay for school lunches online or in the Stephen Bell Main Office. You are able to visit the PaySchools Central website to deposit money electronically. Families may pay SCHOOL FEES on this site, as well. SO easy!
9. We have specials every day of the week!
Our first graders have a forty-five minute special class each day! Specials include Physical Education, Music, Library, Art, Digital Literacy, and STEM/Art. We will have a rotating specials schedule, in which we will rotate through letters A-E throughout the year. This means that the days they have each special will not necessarily be consistent each week, but it will help ensure that students do not miss a special for multiple weeks at a time when there are holidays. I will send out a calendar showing our specials at the start of each month!
Our class' lineup is as follows:
A - Digital Literacy
B - STEM/Art
C - PE
D - Music
E - Library
8. Students who are being dropped off in the morning by a car need to arrive at school between 8:05 and 8:15.
If your child is riding the bus, please see the school website (check here) for your child’s bus information. The school day ends at 2:55pm.
7. Please send your child with a small snack and water bottle to school!
Our class has lunch at 11:15am, so a mid-afternoon snack is a good way to keep brains working and bellies happy. Beginning the first day of school and throughout the rest of the year, I encourage the children to bring their own afternoon snacks. I only ask that the snacks are not messy and are easily managed by the child, as the snacks will be eaten in the classroom. (Unfortunately, fruit cups with juice in them can be very messy, so please do not send these.)
I also ask that children bring water bottles to school for sips throughout the day. It’s nice for students to get a quick drink when needed. Good hydration = better brain function! :)
6. If your child is absent, notify the office.
When your child is absent, call the office 937-848-5001 x5900 or email our wonderful secretaries, Mrs. Horvath marjorie.horvath@bss.k12.oh.us or Mrs. Newlon kelly.newlon@bss.k12.oh.us to let us know of the reason. Please make sure to include your child’s name, teacher, and the reason for the absence on these messages.
5. Parent Square is now the top mode of communication.
My email address is holly.warner@bss.k12.oh.us, but we are switching to the Parent Square app as our main mode of communication this year. I check and respond to these messages as often as I can during the school day, and always try to respond within 24 hours during week days. I will also use Parent Square to notify our families of updates and reminders.
Please note: If you have an urgent matter, such as a change in your child's transportation, please make sure you call the office to ensure I receive the message. I check messages when I get a chance during the day, but your kiddos are my top priority while they are at school with me!
4. We celebrate birthdays (and half-birthdays for summer birthdays)!
Birthdays are a great time to celebrate each of our first graders. We will celebrate in class by creating a class Birthday Book for each child. It is so enjoyable to read what the children write about the birthday boy or girl, and the book is a great keepsake!
Birthday Invites: Also, please note that it is school policy that birthday invitations can only be passed out at school if the entire class is invited. However, if you email me directly, I am happy to ask for permission to share the contact info of individual families so that you can reach out to them directly!
Please Note
Birthday Treats: Your child is welcome to bring and pass out favors, but the school requests that no food be passed out due to allergy concerns.
3. Backpacks and folders should be checked each evening.
Each first grader will receive an EAGLE FOLDER that they will use to bring things home and/or back to school.
Your child will bring work and assessments from class in his or her Eagle Folder. Keep in mind, any work coming home will provide good suggestions for practice, information about what we are doing in class, and demonstrate how your child is doing with first grade curriculum and concepts.
Also, feel free to send notes, lunch money, or any other information to school using your first grader’s Eagle Folder. Part of our daily routine is checking AND adding important papers to the Eagle Folder. The Eagle Folder comes to school and goes home daily!
2. Transportation changes require a note or call to our office.
If your child’s end-of-day transportation needs to be changed, you MUST send a note, email or call Mrs. Newlon kelly.newlon@bss.k12.oh.us and/or Mrs. Horvath marjorie.horvath@bss.k12.oh.us. It is important that our office is aware of all changes so we can ensure that your kiddo gets where they need to go!
If you are unsure about your child's bus info (pickup, dropoff, number, etc.), please contact our transportation office at: 937-848-4029
1. We are going to have an AMAZING year!
Your first grader is going to learn and grow SO much over this school year! :) My goal is to provide your child with a positive school experience in order to make coming to school a joy. In addition to mastering our academic standards for first grade, we will also build our classroom community and learn how to work successfully with others. I look forward to working with you and your first grader this school year! Please feel free to contact me with any questions and/or concerns you may have!
