Throughout the year, we will be using the Fundations program to build students' foundational literacy skills. This program is a multi-sensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program that benefits all K-3 students. It utilizes explicit instruction to help children master letter sounds, combine and change sounds in words, develop a strong vocabulary, comprehend text, form letters correctly, and much more.
We are fortunate to have an expansive set of decodable texts that allow our students to practice the skills they learn during our Fundations Lessons. These texts will be introduced whole group, then students will have opportunities to engage with the texts independently and in small groups over the course of the week. These books are wonderful for helping students use what they are learning during Fundations and build reading fluency! If you would like to see the books our students are reading, check out the Great Minds app on your child's Clever account!
To help students build their reading, writing, and comprehension skills this year, we will also be utilizing a program called, Wit & Wisdom. This program complements our Geodes and Fundations resources and ensures that students are integrating a variety of concepts and skills into their learning. Students will engage in discussions and activities to help them gain a deeper understanding of first grade reading and writing concepts.
In addition, we will complete several thematic writing projects throughout first grade. Writing projects take the children through the process of writing and result in publishing. We will publish by displaying work in our hallway for all to see, sending work home, or occasionally making class books! We also write a birthday book for each child celebrating his/ her birthday (or half birthday). You will enjoy looking at the progress made from August to May! :)
