Your first grader will have math homework (also known as Home Links) most weekdays, Monday through Thursday. They will not have a Home Links sheet to complete on Fridays/the weekend. (These Home Links requirements do not usually begin until a few weeks into school!)
Your child will take home ALL of the home links for the school year at once, bound in a math workbook. I highly suggest that your child keep their workbook in their backpack when they are not working in it so that it does not get lost. In their agenda each day, they will write the number (examples: 1-2, 2-5, 3-7, etc.) of their math homework paper for that day. I will also include the math assignments for the week in my weekly newsletter. You can find that page in the workbook, have your child complete it, rip it out, and send it back to school with your child in their Eagle Folder.
**Note on Policy: I am flexible with homework. I always include the math assignments for the week in my weekly newsletter so that your child can work ahead if they feel comfortable, and most of the assignments are very short and simple. However, I understand that life can get busy, and I do not want you or your child stressing over a first-grade homework assignment late at night - if it comes to that, just do it the next day. I do hope that your child completes the math homework on a decent/regular basis and can bring most of them back to school as it is good practice and builds positive work habits, but please do not let it be a point of stress in your home!
We will also have homework that correlates with our Fundations program. This homework will be sent home at the start of each unit so that you and your child can complete different sheets as we cover different topics throughout the unit. I highly suggest keeping this homework in your child's Eagle Folder or another safe spot at home when it is in progress to keep from losing it! It will not need to be returned to school as it is for the purpose of getting more practice at home.
*This is the most important thing you can do to help your first grader this year and beyond!*
At this age, it is SO important for students to get into the habit of reading for enjoyment outside of school. If your child does not have access to very many books at home, keep in mind that they will be bringing books home from our school library each week, or you can visit a local library if they would like more selection (Winter's Library in downtown Bellbrook is lovely!). Listening to ebooks can also be a helpful option for evenings when the more experienced readers in your home are busy! Your child can access Bookflix through their school Clever account - this is a great resource!
I will not be sending home reading log/tracking sheet as I do not want reading to be a chore - ultimately, I want your child to build a reading routine that they enjoy! I highly suggest building it into a fun nightly routine (even 10 minutes per night is helpful!), such as a bonding time when your child gets home from school or a way to wind down together before bed.
