March 9, 2026
Greetings, BHS students, families and community members! Welcome to March and these lovely early weeks of another Vermont spring. I'm personally grateful for the return of birdsong, later sunsets, and warming days. While the past week was exceptionally difficult for our community, the start of March and the nearing of the Spring equinox nevertheless quietly signify hopefulness and the renewal of life. I look forward to these brightening days and the comfort they bring. And I thank you all for the love, support, and compassion so many of you have extended to one another, to our teachers, and to me personally in recent days. It means the world to us, and reminds me of how fortunate I am to serve this community.
This Wednesday morning, BHS will come together to attend a schoolwide field trip at The Flynn. This feels like a good time to gather to do something both fun and educational, and to connect through the language of music. As organizations began to re-open after COVID-19, The Flynn began holding limited engagement performances for individual schools; BHS was the first school they invited, and students and staff were able to walk over from DtBHS. As our time in our downtown location draws to a close, The Flynn extended an invitation to once again walk over for a show. I look forward to sharing photos from this experience. Our school day will start and end at the usual times on 3/11, but students will start the day in their advisory, return to advisory to debrief the show, get lunch, and then attend shortened versions of all four academic blocks in the afternoon. Our faculty planning team has worked hard to ensure that the journey, seating, performance options, and discussion are inclusive, just as the performance itself will focus on inclusion and belonging. These themes, which remind us of how humans are bound to one another, are more important than ever.
Finally, in a couple weeks we will be administering the BSD Annual Survey schoolwide in the morning. We also want to hear from our families! Please take a moment to complete the BSD Annual Family Survey. BSD and BHS both value your feedback and perspective on your and your child’s experience in our district and at our school. If you need language support to access the survey, please contact your Multilingual Liaison. Responses are used to measure our progress on our Strategic Plan, inform professional development and training, and to identify bright spots and areas of need. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey!
With gratitude and appreciation,
Sabrina Westdijk
Rose Howell (’26) has been named Vermont High School Journalist of the Year by the New England Scholastic Press Association (NESPA). She now advances to the national Journalist of the Year competition. In addition, Howell was selected for NESPA’s All New England High School Journalism Staff, recognizing top student journalists across the region. Congratulations to Rose, and to her journalism teacher, Jeff Finn. This is the second consecutive year in which a BHS student journalist has received this honor, which is an exceptional accomplishment for our journalism program.

Scoir: College & Career Planning Platform Launch
Burlington High School is transitioning from Naviance to Scoir, a modern college and career readiness platform designed to better support students and families as they plan for life after high school. Scoir offers a more intuitive and student-friendly experience, with expanded college search tools, easier navigation, and a centralized space for applications, recommendations, document requests, and communication with counselors. Families will also be able to track application progress and deadlines more easily.
Soon, Juniors will receive an email invitation in Advisory to create their free Scoir account (BTC/CTE students will receive instructions by email). Once logged in, students can explore colleges and careers, build a list of favorite schools, request recommendations and transcripts, sign up for college visits, and receive messages from the counseling team. Parents and guardians will also be invited to join Scoir so they can follow along with their student’s college planning and explore financial aid and cost information. This coming fall, all students will have access to Scoir and will be able to explore this wonderful resource with their school counselors and in Advisory lessons.
We’re excited to bring this new tool to our community and look forward to supporting students as they plan their next steps. Families are encouraged to watch the introductory video and review the resources that will be shared soon. As always, please reach out to your school counselor with any questions.
Junior Meetings Beginning Soon
School counselors will begin meeting with Juniors this week and next for individual planning meetings. During these meetings, counselors and students will review course requests for next year, discuss how those courses support the student’s academic goals and future plans, and check progress toward graduation. Counselors will provide support around the college application process and continue the postsecondary conversations with their caseload.
After junior meetings begin, freshmen and sophomores will also be invited to schedule meetings with their school counselor. These meetings will take place between now and April break and will focus on reviewing course requests, academic planning, and graduation progress.
Individual counselors will reach out directly to students to schedule these appointments. Please reach out to your student’s counselor directly with any questions!
