April 14, 2025
Greetings, BHS students, families and community. I hope this note finds you well and enjoying these early spring days. It looks like we'll be getting warmer and sunnier weather soon. Inside BHS, teaching and learning continues and we are well into the 4th quarter of the year. We also see our school calendar getting increasingly full with end-of-year celebrations, concerts, and awards nights. Please skim each newsletter to make sure you don't miss anything; our school website and calendar page are also good places to look for routine updates.
Last week, I was able to bring my Principal's Student Advisory Group to the new BHS campus for a tour. Things are coming along rapidly in the interior, while the parking lots, roads and walkways, and some of the early landscaping elements are taking shape outside. The students, who represent grades 9-12, were both thrilled and astonished by the new building and all its features and facilities. While not all of them will be able to benefit directly from the new campus, their excitement for future generations of students, and for our community as a whole, was palpable. As someone who is often caught up in the fine details and design decisions, I felt deeply grateful to be able to experience the tour with them and through their eyes. You can find some photos of our trip, including a group shot on the balcony (yes, a balcony!) below.
Speaking of appreciation, Teacher Appreciation Week will be celebrated on May 5-9. We will be doing a variety of things to celebrate our teachers, but it's also the perfect time to honor those educators -- both teachers and paraeducators -- who stand out and exemplify all that's great about the profession. Like last year, I'm inviting our entire school community, including students and families, to submit nominations for the Teacher of the Year Award and Paraeducator of the Year Award. The leadership team will review all nominations to determine our 2025 honorees, and will also publish the full list of nominees to the staff (because it feels great to know you were nominated!). Our honorees will be named at Academic Awards Night on May 28th. To nominate an educator, please submit either or both of these forms no later than May 9th:
Finally, this is the last week to complete the BSD Annual Family Survey for BHS. If you've not taken it yet, please consider doing so -- it's fast, anonymous and important. We have had a great response rate from our staff and students, but we've only heard from 11% of our caregivers so far. We want to hear from you! BSD values your feedback and perspective on your and your child’s experience in our district and at our school. If you need language support to access the survey, please contact your Multilingual Liaison. Responses are used to measure our progress on our district Strategic Plan, inform professional development and training, and to identify bright spots and areas of need. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey!
As a reminder, all BSD schools will be closed on 4/21-4/25 for Spring Break. Whether you're traveling or staying in town, I hope you and your family have a restful, safe and fun time away from the usual routine!
With appreciation,
Sabrina Westdijk
Please join us on the evening of April 17th to enjoy performances by our bands and choirs, as well as displays of student artwork representing an array of mediums and a year of learning together. Light refreshments will be provided.
This is an evening for rising 9th graders and their families to get familiar with BHS, their teachers, and our academic programs and extracurriculars!
The BHS Prom will be hosted at Hula again this year, from 8-11pm.
Tickets will be on sale after the return from Spring Break. Stay tuned for announcements from Student Graduation.
ALSO: Senior Shirt Orders DUE 4/14.
Commencement is only weeks away, on June 12 at UVM's Patrick Gym (3-4:30pm)!
That means it’s time to start getting serious about deadlines and the fun that lays ahead. Please encourage your senior to review their email at least twice weekly to ensure they don’t miss out on important opportunities and reminders. Please review the Graduation FAQ Sheet 2025 for more details on all the important senior things!
Over the next few days, please support your 12th grader with the completion of the following important tasks:
Diploma order: survey linked here (designed to be completed by 12th grade students)
Personal learning Plan (PLP): review the PLP Checklist linked here and the PLP Conference expectations here. All students are required to complete a presentation of learning and PLP as part of their graduation requirements. Please reach out to our PLP Coordinator, Kim Fankhauser, with any additional questions or concerns related to this process.
Senior yearbook survey linked here. This is where seniors get to shine! Each student has the opportunity to submit their senior feature in the Yearbook, including a quote, dedication, and special high school memories. Please reach out to Colby Skogland with any additional questions or concerns related to this process.
Tickets for graduation: each Graduate will receive ten (10) tickets. If you would like to request a limited number of additional tickets, please fill out this form by May 30th.
We are just 8.5 weeks away from the start of YES, which is Thursday, May 29th! Students will learn about their YES assignments in late April. Assignments will be posted at BHS and students will have an opportunity to meet their YES teachers in a “meet your teacher day” in mid-May during Advisory.
Some important reminders for students and families about YES:
YES course assignments are final.
There is no “add/drop” window like we have for our traditional academic scheduling.
Attendance is mandatory.
Personal appointments--such as seeing your doctor or dentist--should be scheduled for OUTSIDE of class time (9:30am - 2:15pm).
If students miss more than two classes for their YES courses, then they will not earn credit.
Students will need to make-up this credit in order to graduate.
Options for how to make-up credit will be communicated at the start of the next school year from the YES Coordinator.
Credit is earned on a Pass/Fail basis.
The Presentation of Learning (POL) Day is mandatory.
This is on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
If students miss this day, then they will not earn credit for their YES class until they complete a make-up presentation at the start of the following school year upon return.
If a senior misses the POL Day, then they will not be able to participate in graduation.
Independent studies are not an option.
We do not offer independent studies as an option for the YES Session.
All students must participate in a YES course offered at BHS.
If students are participating in an external program, such as Aspirnaut, then the student must reach out to the YES Coordinator (yes@bsdvt.org) and Principal Westdijk (swestdij@bsdvt.org) for approval. This entails the submission of an alternative YES proposal form. Approval of external programs are rare.
BHS Model UN performed admirably throughout their conference at Dartmouth from April 4-6, demonstrating diplomacy, goodwill, and decorum in their committee sessions. A shoutout goes to Sean Fleming for his skilled coaching, and BHS Humanities Interventionist Ben Heintz for his support as a chaperone during the event -- they couldn't have done it without him!
Flexible Pathways Updates
Dual Enrollment is now open for the fall semester. Current Juniors, please contact Ms. Stein kstein@bsdvt.org for an appointment if you would like to explore options for the fall or if you are still thinking about a summer course - now is the time to register. Current Sophomores will be eligible to sign up for summer or fall courses beginning on June 13th (the day you become rising Juniors).
Career Technical Education: Students and families have been notified if they have been admitted. Please confirm your intent to accept or decline directly to BTC or CTE.
BCL 14 students continue to deepen their collaborations with community partners. This week we began exploring the world of clothing and fashion, visiting shops on Church Street to learn about their values and practices, and discussing how our clothing choices reflect our own values, cultures, and identities. Check out our recent Instagram posts to learn more!
Sophomores and Juniors can still apply! Even if they don't know what their schedule will look like, applying is the way to let Counselors know that students are interested. (NOTE: Even if a student thinks they might do BTC, if they are interested in BCL they should still apply, so it can be an option if they don't do BTC.) Find the application here!
Week of 4/14-4/18
Remember, it's never too late to try something new! Students are welcome to join a club at any time.
There is no afterschool programming during the week of Spring Break (4/21-4/25).
