March 3, 2025
Greetings, BHS Families & Community. I hope you and your loved ones had a healthy, enjoyable and restful February Break. We are excited to welcome students back this week, and we're also looking forward to meeting with many of you during Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences. Despite the deep cold of recent days and the snow still piled high everywhere, the official start of Spring is just around the corner -- and the clocks will "spring forward" this coming weekend, on March 9.
Your student may have shared they had guest observers in their classroom recently. Burlington High School is hosting two "learning walks" this Spring. First, on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 18, the BSD Teacher Advisory Group visited BHS. It’s incredibly valuable for teachers from our school and other schools in the district to learn about teaching and learning outside of their own classrooms, so we were excited to welcome this group to our school. Second, on Tuesday, March 11, 17 principals and directors from our district leadership team (the Cabinet) will visit BHS for the morning. As a district leadership team we are refocusing on the instructional core and being more in touch with what's actually taking place in classrooms on a daily basis. Fortunately, BHS teachers welcome district presence and interest in the amazing work they are doing in their classrooms.
I've been excited to host these learning walks because I think it’s essential to be curious and knowledgeable about what’s happening in our classrooms. This is also why we have developed a new walkthrough tool and have set classroom visit goals for each member of the BHS administrative team, and why I’m on the district workgroup tasked with designing our instructional framework. I want to encourage teachers to explore and learn from what their colleagues are doing, and I think it’s essential that our district level leaders (principals included) make frequent visits to classrooms in order to better understand the current reality of being a student and/or school-based staff member. Deep understanding leads to instructional growth and improving student outcomes!
Please check out this edition for information about upcoming events (including a very cool event in April being organized by BHS Student Government), an overview of how we are supporting our students and staff observing Ramadan, a lot of student accomplishments to celebrate, and ways to stay connected to Seahorse Pride (our amazing PTO).
Thank you, always, for your support of our learning community.
With appreciation,
Sabrina Westdijk
All BSD schools have an early release THIS Wednesday, 3/5, for Parent Teacher Conferences.
BSD's proposed budget is projected to lower tax rates by 4%! This one-page information sheet has more on the budget. You can also visit our website or read this year's Annual Report for more information about our Strategic Plan, student demographics, and more.
BHS is holding our parent-teacher conferences during a full day on 3/4, and the afternoon on 3/5. We hope to see you there!
Support BHS Student events (specifically free/reduced tickets for dances) by purchasing a $20 Calcutta raffle ticket for an April 11th student hosted Cabaret Night at Edmunds Middle School. Attending the event is FREE- all are welcome!
Tickets for the raffle can be purchased through the Student Gov’t Go Fund Me: gofund.me/a9ed549d. Any questions can be sent to the clubs advisor: Bowen Stephens bstephen@bsdvt.org.
Does your student have a talent that should be celebrated? Encourage them to sign up to perform at the Cabaret!
As a way to appreciate their teachers who have challenged and supported them this season, JV players invited those staff members for an end of season celebration. The JVB and JVA teams came into this game not knowing what level of skill they were going to be up against! The leading score going back and forth multiple times. As tired as we were, the teams headed into OVERTIME with a tied 45-45 score at the end of the 4th quarter. JV Boys' energy was unmatchable in OT and they took the win overall. Thank you to Coach Remy, staff Marion Boa, Ryan Boldwin, Hayden Chichester, Andrew Cloutier, Molly Doran, Francesca Dupuis, Gena Elliott, Peter Fleming, Dan Hagan, Michael Leonard, Lauren Morse, Timony Norris, Josh Reed, Bowen Stephens, Shannon Walters and all family members who were in attendance and helping!!
On February 18th, the BHS Poetry Club (advised by Tammie Ledoux) held its annual Poetry Out Loud competition. 10th graders Matthew Moody and Moya Thayer and 12th graders Lincoln Safran and Penelope deRosset competed. Penelope deRosset came in first place with a reading of “[Buffalo Bill’s]” by E.E. Cummings, and Moya Thayer was runner up, with a reading of “I am Trying to Break Your Heart” by Kevin Young. If you happen to see any of these amazing young folks this week, please congratulate them on a job well done, and help us all wish Penny good luck as she advances to the semi-finals on March 6th! The Poetry Club would also like to thank our judges Shannon Walters, Timony Norris, Ben Heintz and Benjamin Roesch, as well as Paul Jones of the BHS After School program for his support!
Burlington HS senior Connor Byam is the Vermont High School Journalist of the Year, the New England Scholastic Press Association (NESPA) announced Sunday. Byam, editor in chief of The Register, now becomes eligible for the Journalism Education Association's national Journalist of the Year competition, the winner of which will be named at the organization's April convention in Seattle. NESPA also named Byam as one of 17 members of its first-ever All New England High School Journalism Staff, which recognizes the top high school journalists working on newspapers, yearbooks, broadcasts, or literary magazines throughout the six New England states. Byam was the only Vermont member of the All New England Staff. The Register is advised by English & journalism teacher Jeff Finn.
BHS Ethics Bowl Team Advances to National Tournament
Last month, our Ethics Bowl team beat Concord Academy. As a result, our team became New England champions and will now join 23 teams from around the country as qualifiers for the national tournament at UNC-Chapel Hill on April 11-13. Congratulations, and special thanks to their dedicated coach, BHS parent and UVM professor Tyler Doggett.
Math Department News: Math League Advances!
The BHS Math League team had a 3rd place finish (out of 13 schools) at the most recent meet on Feb 19. It was our best showing this year (three 4th place finishes previously). The final meet will be on Tues March 18.
In addition: The 68th Annual UVM Math Exam will be administered on Tuesday, March 11 for BHS students. Prizes are awarded to the top finishers in the state. The exam is a two hour test without any calculator or technology use. Here is a link to the test in recent years. Any student interested in taking the test should contact Mr. Tremblay in person or via email at ntrembla@bsdvt.org
While we are a public school, we are committed to being as inclusive as possible, and are taking several steps (as we have in the past) to be mindful of the members of our learning community who are observing Ramadan. This year, to ensure our planning was more responsive, we formed a planning committee composed of students and staff observing Ramadan. Among other ideas, this group defined the expectations outlined below for prayer and prayer spaces, and volunteered to serve as student leaders in those spaces as needed.
Support for Fasting
Our Wellness Office stands ready to support students who become fatigued and need some time to rest as they abstain from food and water. Teachers have received guidance to provide a nurse pass to any student who needs that support. If a student is too unwell to continue their day after a period of rest in the Wellness Office, the nurses may decide to send a student home early, excused, and the parent/guardian will be notified.
The library will become a food-free space during Ramadan to offer an alternative setting for fasting students at lunch time.
The Food Services Team has been working with the Multilingual Learners office to provide take home food for students to consume after sundown. If you've not yet signed up and wish to, here is a link to the order form: Meal order form/ Ramadan. We will need folks to order by Thursday if they would like meals on the following week; a single form can be used to request any or all weeks of food service during Ramadan.
PE Class
Our PE teachers are developing low-exertion and/or no-exertion alternatives for their daily lessons (this can include something as simple as asking students to bring books and quietly read, if needed).
Prayer
This year, we have reserved two private rooms to be utilized for prayer, so that we have a dedicated space for both male- and female-identifying students. At the high school level, students will be permitted to use these spaces during the lunch break, advisory block, the first half of Block 3 (once the afternoon prayer begins during Block 3), the first 20 minutes of Block 4 (as a makeup time, if scheduled in class), during an afternoon free block, or immediately after school.
Expectations for prayer during a scheduled class period:
Students should first go to their scheduled class.
Prayer should not require more than 15-20 minutes out of class, if a student is opting to leave class to observe prayer.
A pass is needed from their teacher to leave class and check in to a prayer room
Students who abuse the pass repeatedly (2+ times) may lose access to the pass, after a conversation with the teacher; at that point, they would need to utilize the prayer space during lunch, during a free block, or right after school.
Students should go directly to prayer and return directly to class afterward
Expectations for the prayer rooms:
Students should arrive to quietly observe prayer and then leave immediately to not disrupt other students’ prayers
Prayer rooms are not a space for conversation, hanging out, or play
The prayer rooms should be left as the room was found, putting things like prayer mats away before you leave, to respect the space for others.
Like-gendered teachers can supervise the space as needed, silently, without interfering with prayer; the school wishes for this to be a student-monitored space, ideally.
The prayer room would open for all of lunch and advisory daily, and until 1:30 during Block 3. It will again be open for the first 20 minutes of Block 4 as a “makeup window”.
Music
Some students will opt-out of singing, playing music, or listening to music, during Ramadan. The district has only collected information around which parents are excusing their children from music for K-8 students, since high school students are directing their own observances. Teachers will provide alternatives and inform their planning over the next month.
Thank you in advance for your support as we work to ensure that BHS is a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for all learners. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Sabrina Westdijk with any questions.
Flexible Pathways Updates
Burlington Tech's priority application deadline is coming up on Friday, March 7th! Check out our online application portal here, and talk with your school counselor or email sclark@bsdvt.org for more information.
Please note that some of the club meeting days have changed this week. Jr. Milers Running Club starts this Wednesday, while International Club has shifted to Tuesday morning. Registration for BHS Rowing Club has started, and the BHS Outing Club will host a Goat Yoga event on 3/29. Space is limited for this, so let Ms. Sercel know if interested.
BCL 14 has been out and about in the city, learning about its history, getting to know our non-human neighbors, and sharing their voices and perspectives on Burlington’s present and future with community leaders!
PLEASE NOTE: At this point, all Sophomores and Juniors have made course requests for next year. Whether or not they requested BCL, any interested student is still welcome to apply! An application will indicate to the student's Counselor that they should work to build a schedule that includes BCL. It's best to apply as soon as possible--even if the student doesn't know if BCL will fit! Find the application here!
Seahorse Pride is the parent volunteer organization at BHS. We provide funds and support for arts and academic programming at BHS, in addition to athletics, and other extra-curricular clubs that fall outside the normal school budget. We raise funds through donations from area businesses, families, concession stand sales, and apparel sales run by parent volunteers at events throughout the school year.
Seahorse Pride proudly supports Model UN, Fall Welcome events for all students, the library, graduation celebrations, teacher appreciation events, Open House activities, teacher-requested funding for workshops and materials, educational field trips, academic group funding, travel needs to/from events, spirit weeks, homecoming, and much, much more.
We have a goal of raising $5,000 and ask for your support so we can continue with these enriching events and programs. No donation is too small, or too big, and every dollar goes to support our students!
