October 6, 2025
Greetings, BHS students, families and community. We're now in the second half of the first quarter, with our first schoolwide testing coming up on Wednesday, 10/15. This involves both an unusual early start, and an early release, so please check out the detailed schedule below and mark your calendars. Some reminders will also go out from BHS later this week, and the eve of testing.
In the last newsletter, I provided an overview of the changes we've made to how we calculate classroom grades -- specifically, the names of weighted categories and the weight each has been given. For some students, this has been a substantial change, forcing a reexamination in how they prioritize classroom assignments and prepare for assessments like quizzes and tests. I'm excited that we have aligned across our school, and I am confident that students will adjust to a system that more accurately tells them, teachers, and student supports what learners know and can do (rather than how well they can play a game of averages). This week, the BHS Implementation Task Force will convene for the second full day of the year (of four) to focus on the school's reassessment procedures. Again, the goal is to refine our approach to reassessment so that it is not only aligned to our purpose of grading and our values, but also more consistent and predictable across the school (rather than varying by teacher or department). I will continue to provide routine updates on this ongoing work, and I am optimistic about how increased clarity and consistency will support our learners, our staff, and families.
A couple weeks ago, BSD had an early release day for professional development. At BHS, all professional development time will be utilized to develop a guaranteed, written curriculum across all content areas. This year, we are focusing on 9th and 10th grade course scope and sequence, but we will move on through 11th and 12th grade next year. Each department did an amazing job last week hammering out priority standards for 9th grade. In the process, they surfaced important philosophical differences and pedagogical implications that they will continue to work through together. It was an energizing, collaborative afternoon!
The end goal of all this work is to establish absolute clarity around our content area proficiency-based graduation standards, rigorous priority standards aligned to grade-level national standards in each discipline, and common summative tasks at each grade level. Once those elements are clear, we can develop common proficiency scales so that we are calibrated in how we assess and ultimately assign grades to student work. Just as with the work on grading and reporting discussed above, this alignment will provide transparency around what students are expected to know, do and understand at each grade level, and allow students to understand exactly how they will be assessed and graded. Clarity is empowering for students, and will allow learners to take greater ownership of their learning. While this will be a multi-year process, I believe that the benefits of this work will be felt by students this year.
As always, thank you for your support of BHS. I have valued the questions you've asked about the curriculum work we're doing, and I am thankful to serve a community that is so involved and committed to high-quality education.
With appreciation,
Sabrina Westdijk
BHS will be hosting fall progress monitoring and the PSAT on Wednesday, 10/15. All 9-11th grade students must arrive at 7:45am on 10/15. Testing begins at 8am. Students can expect to dismiss around 11:35am that day.
Seniors: We are offering 12th graders drop-in support on their PLP portfolios and presentations, the Common Application, and college essay writing. Please take advantage of these resources!
Please see more details about the 10/15 testing schedule below, with details for each grade level.
There is no school on 10/23 in observance of Diwali. This is a school holiday for BSD students and educators.
If your student(s) missed picture day, or wants retakes, please get this date on your calendar. Photographers will take drop-ins before, during & right after school.

A huge congratulations to BHS music student Lisa Zhou-Hackett, who was named one of the winners of the Vermont Youth Orchestra Senior Solo Competition!
Lisa will take the spotlight as the featured soloist at the VYO’s concert on October 19th at The Flynn. We’d love to see our community come out to cheer on Lisa and several other incredible BHS music students who are also members of the VYOA at this exciting event. Ticket information can be found in the accompanying flyer, left, of on The Flynn website.

ICYMI: AP Exam Registration DUE Nov. 7
All students enrolled in AP courses need to complete the ‘pink form’ and submit payment for the exams by November 7. Forms are available in the Counseling office with Ducky Jones. Failure to hand in the form is a failure to register and will likely lead to an extra $40 fee. Students who receive Free or Reduced lunch are eligible for a fee waiver. Any student needing financial assistance can connect with their school counselor.
Note: This year, all students taking AP classes must either take the exam or take an equally rigorous test with their subject area teacher at the end of the school year.
Each year, BSD requires that all families complete the Annual Returning Student Registration for each of their students, grades PK-12. We have been making great progress on the completion of the annual returning student registration, but MANY caregivers have yet to complete these required forms via the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Please complete the Returning Student Registration forms at your earliest convenience, if you've not already. Staff in the main office and the counseling office are available to assist you if needed. The forms were initially due on August 26, 2025. You can complete the forms on a computer or download the PowerSchool Parent app on your mobile phone. Need help logging into your Parent Portal Account? Our “How To” document has the answers you need.
There are a variety of very important reasons we need these forms:
No student is allowed to go on a “walking” field trip unless the Agreements and Permissions form have been completed this year. This currently applies to around 250 BHS students, and field trips are getting scheduled. We want them to be able to join!
From a healthcare perspective, we need to have students' updated medical and vaccine information in order to ensure we have up-to-date information regarding health needs, medications, allergies, and more. Vermont requires several vaccines to attend school, and we need annual verification in order for students to be permitted to continue attending. Nurses have been working on vaccine compliance.
Students are not guaranteed Chromebook access without having signed their annual device use agreement.
Students are welcome to join any club at any time, or fit clubs in around other commitments like athletics.
Reach out to Paul Jones with any questions, or if you have any suggestions/ideas for new clubs you'd like to see at BHS, this year or next. The new school and its facilities may allow for new and exciting afterschool offerings!
Mark your calendars: Career Technical Information Session on 10/29
Please join us on Wednesday, October 29th for a Career Technical Information Session at BHS.
Students and families are invited to learn more about career technical education from our local technical centers staff. Burlington Technical Center and Center for Technology Essex will share information about programming, visit days, application deadlines, and how career technical education may enhance a students' time in high school. This will be an in-person informative evening at Burlington High School on Wednesday, October 29th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm.
The evening is intended for current 10th and 11th grade students and families (but all grade levels are welcome). Please use the Cherry Street entrance and if parked in the garage start a ParkMobile session zone 5826 for a free 2-hr parking session.

This week, BCL15 met with partners from several organizations focused on the complex issue of housing in Burlington, as well as performed “case studies” of two important third spaces in our city: City Hall Park and the Fletcher Free Library. Alongside some incredibly thoughtful and compassionate community partners, we discussed the park’s and library’s challenges and opportunities, as well as how we as citizens can participate in helping these spaces to thrive.
BCL is a unique place-based experiential program that offers full BHS credit to Juniors and Seniors. In BCL, Burlington itself is both our classroom and our curriculum. It’s real-world, empowering, and fun!

In a world moving at warp speed, many students feel overwhelmed by the pressure to make big decisions right after high school. Research shows that students who take intentional time away from formal academics return with real-world skills, greater self-confidence, and a clearer sense of purpose. Families are turning to gap years as a creative way for young adults to build a stronger foundation for what lies ahead.
Julia Rogers, a local gap year counselor and nationally recognized expert on experiential education, will share how gap years help students gain confidence, explore new interests, and prepare for what’s ahead. She’ll outline how families at every budget level can make a gap year possible, highlight the wide range of opportunities students are pursuing, and explain why more colleges and employers are recognizing the benefits.
This free community event is part of Gap Year Exploration Month this October. Whether you’re a student, parent, or educator, it’s an opportunity to learn why the growing popularity of the gap year option is reshaping how families think about success after high school.
