Happy New Year and welcome to Spring Semester, which began today.
We've had a great deal of success (and fun!) registering students for this spring's YES Program over the last couple weeks. At this point, the vast majority of students have registered, and we are now following up with all students who have not. If you haven't yet, check in with your student about which offerings they've selected! And if your child, or you, are wondering when YES placements will be announced, we encourage your patience: we plan to post course assignments just prior to the start of Spring Break in April.
One other item to let you know about (this info has already been shared with students): Prior to the start of second semester, we made a change to how we assign grade level reporting in Powerschool, which became effective last week. This change affects around 10% of students, but we want to make sure all families are also aware. For the last few years, we've entered the grade level that matches how many credits each student has earned (rather than one that matches how many years they've been at BHS). For most students, they're the same thing. But for students who are behind on credits, the grade level does not match how many years they've been in school (a 3rd year student, for example, may still be listed as a 9th grader). The goal of this approach was to make sure every student and family was crystal clear on whether they were on track to graduate. While that was a great goal, it had a lot of other unintended consequences for students and some of our systems (like the color of ID cards, yearbook photos, advisory assignments, and much more). For some students, that has felt really embarrassing or shaming, which was not the intent.
To correct this, we have now changed the grade level in Powerschool to match the number of years in high school, regardless of credits earned. However, it's important to understand that credits earned still determine graduation eligibility. That has not changed. For example, if your student's grade level changed to 12 last week, but they do not have the number of credits to match, then they still are not eligible to graduate this Spring with other 12th graders. So it matters that students and your family also pay close attention to how many credits have been earned, which can be found in the Powerschool portal. Students whose grade level have changed who want an updated school ID should see Ms. Camp in the Main Office and she will be happy to create a new ID card for them.
Please check out the rest of this issue for updates on upcoming events, information about National Honor Society, afterschool programming, and SAT registration, some changes in our cafeteria and more!
With appreciation,
Sabrina Westdijk
BHS Principal

What is it?
National Honor Society (NHS) is a community service club committed to supporting BHS and the greater Burlington community. NHS also promotes scholarship, leadership, and positive character development in its members.
How do I join?
Students are considered for membership each spring (juniors) and each fall (seniors).
To be considered for membership, a student must:
Be a second semester junior (spring) or first semester senior (fall)
Be enrolled in rigorous academic classes
Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
Have been in attendance at BHS for at least one full semester
Have not been suspended during the previous semester
All students who meet the above criteria will be invited to fill out a Student Information Packet to be considered for membership. The invitation will be emailed to students and sent via USPS. The Information Packet requires students to list community service completed, discuss leadership experience, and respond to short answer and essay prompts. Submitting a Student Information Packet does not result in automatic membership. The NHS Faculty Council will review the Information Packet, faculty feedback, and a candidate's online presence to make a decision about the candidate's membership.
What is the timeline?
Late March: Letters of Invitation sent to eligible juniors
Early April: Candidates request an Information Packet
Mid-April: Information Packet submission deadline and packet review
Early May: Candidates are notified of their membership status
Late May: Induction Ceremony
Early October: Letters of invitation sent to eligible non-member seniors
Mid-October: Information Packet submission deadline and packet review
Mid-October: Candidates are notified (new members will be officially inducted the following spring)
Why join?
Community Engagement: Contribute to projects that uplift our local community, from food drives to tutoring programs and environmental initiatives.
Leadership Development: Take charge of impactful events and learn to lead with integrity and purpose.
Personal Growth: Volunteering allows you to connect with peers, understand diverse perspectives, and build empathy.
Future Opportunities: NHS membership is a hallmark of achievement and service, opening doors for scholarships, college applications, and lifelong networks.
And it's a lot of fun!

On January 6 Center for Technology Essex hosted 36 BHS students for their annual visit day. Each student explored two program areas. If your student visited CTE and would like to apply they must use this link to apply for their program area of interest. More information regarding CTE’s admissions process can be found here.
On January 7th CTE presented their Pre-Tech programs to 9th graders during advisory. Pre-Technical education is a one year program for sophomores only. Students who thrive in project-oriented learning with applied academics will do well in Pre-Tech. Much of the learning takes place outside a traditional classroom. Pre-Tech teachers favor authentic locations to engage reluctant students and to provide experiences for deeper and more relevant learning.
To register for CTE Pre-Tech visit day on February 7 click this link. Please remember that permission slips are due to Ms. Stein by 1/14. Permission slips are located outside of Ms. O’Hara’s office on the first floor and on the flexible pathways board near room 260.
We also had a record breaking amount of interest in the BTC visit day. Students who completed both the BTC registration form and the permission slip by the end of the day on 1/9/2025 have received an email confirming that they have completed those two steps. If your student did not hand in a completed permission slip, BTC is offering evening times to visit the programs. Check out their webpage for the details.
What a remarkable end to the Fall Semester! Check out our recent blog posts, highlighting our remarkable public art performance, and the spirit of the program!
During the next few weeks, the BCL team will be doing outreach to students who may want to apply for next year’s program. On 1/27, we will be presenting during Advisory periods to all Sophomores and Juniors. On Tuesday, 1/28, students who want to learn more will have the opportunity to get passes from their Advisor to join a small-group information session.
Feel free to let your student know about these upcoming opportunities. The BCL team will also be tabling in the cafeteria. Interested students should stop by!
The application for BCL’s 2025-26 program is live! It’s not too early for current Sophomores and Juniors to apply. (Applicants will also need to request BCL during the course request process, in late February.)
