January 12, 2026
Greetings, BHS students and families, and Happy New Year! I hope 2026 is off to a good start for you. We began second semester this week, and you can expect fall semester grade reports in your mailboxes in the next few weeks.
Thanks to extensive messaging at school and at home, the new bell-to-bell cell phone ban has gotten off to a very good start. We saw (and collected) very few phones on our first day of the new rules, and we saw a lot more conversation and play during passing times and lunches. According to the research, one of the most immediate impacts of less screen time and social media is an increase in face-to-face social interactions (followed by an uptick in social-emotional health and well-being), so we are feeling really optimistic about all of the ways these new expectations will result in positive change for our students and our school. Thanks are due to all caregivers who we know have had conversations at home about phones. We truly appreciate your support and partnership!
Our new schoolwide reassessment procedures also went into effect this week, and we will be working over the course of this semester to support teachers and departments in examining how to best create reassessments that are targeted, effective, and sustainable (for students and teachers!). If you or your student have any questions about reassessment, or any concerns, please start with your teacher(s) but feel free to loop in an administrator as you feel appropriate. Please assume best intentions -- shifting to schoolwide expectations and alignment in any area is big work, but we are all here to support you as we navigate this new approach to learning and assessment together.
But the work continues! Across all stakeholders group (student, staff and family advisory groups) our attention will next turn to examining another challenge at BHS, which is also a district priority area: racial and social class disparities in enrollment and retention in AP and Honors courses. If you've seen recent Board presentations of district data, you've seen that we've not been able to meaningfully narrow these gaps in recent years. Doing so will be a BHS administrative priority moving forward. We are hoping to identify both short- and long-term action steps to address this long-running issue, with the goal of ensuring equitable access to our most rigorous courses.
Thank you for your support and partnership as we have been engaging in important and difficult work to support deeper learning, student engagement, and academic success! The positive messages from families about reassessment and phone limitations have been uplifting and affirming!
With appreciation,
Sabrina Westdijk

724 students have registered for YES, which is amazing! However, this still means that about 150 students still have not registered.
Families: Please check in with your student ASAP to confirm they’ve registered (they would have received an email confirmation from the Google Form).
Students: Please know that if you do not complete registration by January 16, then you will not be able to access the form. It will officially be closed.
Why does this matter? The sorting process will begin soon. This means that students who did register will be prioritized. This also means that when we are able to meet with students who did not register, then you will have less options to choose from for YES courses.
Friendly reminder: There is no Add/Drop period for YES courses. Counselors do not have access to the registration requests; it is a process separate from the Counseling Department.
BHS Senior Victoria Tornwini has been named a finalist for the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award presented by the Office of the Vermont Secretary of State. This award honors the extraordinary accomplishments of Congressman John Lewis and recognizes the achievements of people under the age of 25 who have demonstrated leadership abilities, a passion for social justice, and are motivated to improve the quality of life in their community. Victoria was recognized at the Vermont State House in Montpelier on January 12.
The new year is upon us, and so is a new semester! Quarter 3 begins on 1/12/26, and the Counseling Department will be holding an Add/Drop period from Monday, 1/12 to Thursday, 1/15 for Semester 2 semester-long courses. If you would like to request a change to your schedule, please see Ducky Jones in the Counseling Office (room 113) to make an appointment with your school counselor!
Please note:
Semester-Long Course Changes Only: Course changes can only be made for semester-long courses. We will not be making changes to year-long classes.
No Schedule or Student Is the Same: Each student's schedule is unique and factors that shape yours may be different from your peers. Some changes may not be possible due to such factors as: scheduling conflicts, available class space, and your unique graduation progress goals.
Reasonable Changes: We do not make changes to schedules so that students can be with friends in classes or have a specific teacher.
Number of Minimum Classes: 9th graders need to be scheduled for 8 classes per semester; 10th graders for at least 8 classes, 11th graders for at least 7 classes, and 12th graders for at least 6 classes per semester.
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Burlington High School will offer the SAT college preparatory exam.
Registration is now open and will close on February 27th. Juniors and families can check their emails for additional information! Please contact your school counselor with any questions.
Students who are eligible for reduced fees are able to take the SAT at no cost.
CTE Pre-Tech Visit Day
During advisory on Tuesday, January 13 all 9th graders will be introduced to the Center for Technology Pre-Tech program. This flyer has details regarding the visit day sign up process. Students may email Ms. Stein (kstein@bsdvt.org) with questions. Permission slips will be available by the counseling office and by the events board on the second level of BHS beginning Tuesday.
BCL15 has been wrapping up the semester by reflecting on all that we have experienced and learned together. This week, students took part in our Final Synthesis alongside community partners, completed service projects in our home space, the O.N.E. Community Center, played games, and enjoyed our last days as a cohort.
BCL is a unique place-based experiential program that offers full BHS credit to Juniors and Seniors. In BCL, Burlington itself is both our classroom and our curriculum. It’s real-world, empowering, and fun! To learn more about Burlington City & Lake Semester, watch this short video, check out our blog, or follow us on Instagram: @btvcityandlake
